Former Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley shared his thoughts on the legacy of ex-Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno, who passed away in October 2024, in a statement published on Metal OBS. The discussion focused on Di’Anno’s unique place in the band’s history.

“There’s different eras of Maiden, of course, but only Paul, really, in my mind, only Paul is the legend,” Bayley said. “After that, we carry the name, we carry the torch of Iron Maiden.”

“I may become a legend, [current Iron Maiden singer] Bruce [Dickinson] may become a legend, but the legend of Iron Maiden belongs to Paul on those first two albums,” he continued. “Because they broke the mold, not just of heavy metal, but of music.”

“Those albums are so different and do so many things,” Bayley added. “They break the rules, and they go, ‘This is the way we do it.’ And that’s something that… He’s a legend. He was a legend. He now is a timeless legend.”

“So that’s something that can never be changed, in my opinion,” he said. “It’s only my opinion. Other people will say different things, but in my opinion, you listen to some of the songs on the first two albums — man, it’s so different to everything else that was going on.”

Bayley’s words carried extra weight given his own journey as a custodian of the Iron Maiden legacy. Since Di’Anno’s passing, the former singer has taken concrete steps to honor his predecessor’s memory both on stage and in the wider heavy metal community.

Bayley added “Wrathchild” to his solo setlist specifically as a tribute to Di’Anno. He performed the classic track from the band’s early catalog at his concerts. The gesture was a personal way of keeping Di’Anno’s spirit alive in front of live audiences. The tribute extended beyond his own shows. Bayley joined other former Iron Maiden members for a dedicated tribute concert at Germany’s Keep It True Rising V festival in October 2025. They performed material from the Di’Anno era.

The metal community’s recognition of Di’Anno’s legacy has continued well into 2026. Both Bayley and Di’Anno have been included among the former Iron Maiden members slated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This marks a significant acknowledgment of their contributions to the band’s history. The induction has brought renewed attention to the early years of the band. It has also highlighted the foundational role Di’Anno played in shaping its sound.

In reflecting on his own place within the band’s lineage, Bayley has consistently emphasized that he sees himself as a bridge between eras rather than a legend in the same vein as Di’Anno. His humility and respect for the band’s history have resonated with fans who appreciate his willingness to honor the legacy of those who came before him.
