Former Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz has paid tribute to late Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds, reflecting on what she considers his most powerful work with the band. In a feature for Revolver Magazine, she shared her appreciation for Hinds’ musicianship and honored his legacy.
When asked to choose her favorite Mastodon track, White-Gluz pointed to a song she believes showcases Hinds at his absolute best. She expressed heartfelt gratitude for his impact on heavy music and offered sympathy to those closest to him. “I want to say a big thank you to Brent and Mastodon for the amazing music over the years,” White-Gluz said. “Brent, thank you for your contribution and your talent.”
She continued with a message to the band, Hinds’ loved ones, and fans mourning his passing. “To all of Mastodon and Brent’s family and friends and fans: my deepest condolences on this horrible loss,” she added. “I’m so happy we have this music so we can continue to celebrate Brent’s legacy and everything that he has contributed to our beloved metal scene.”
White-Gluz singled out “Quintessence” as the track where Hinds’ musicianship shines brightest. “So with that, I would like to highlight one song in particular where I think that Brent really shines — and that song is ‘Quintessence,’” she explained. “So if you haven’t heard it, please go check it out.”
Brent Hinds’ influence on modern metal remains immense. According to BPR, he died at age 51 in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta on August 20. His more than 25-year tenure with Mastodon left a lasting mark on the genre and cemented his reputation as one of its most distinctive guitarists.
His style fused Southern blues and rockabilly with progressive metal, a combination noted by Guitar World as central to shaping Mastodon’s signature sound. This blend of technicality and roots-driven expression became key to the band’s identity and helped differentiate them within the scene. The widespread recognition of their work included a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2018, documented by Metal Injection—a milestone underscoring both the band’s artistry and Hinds’ essential role in its evolution.
White-Gluz’s tribute highlights the profound respect Hinds inspired among peers and fans. By spotlighting “Quintessence” as a defining moment in his career, she emphasizes the enduring emotional and artistic power of his music. His legacy continues to echo throughout the metal community and will be celebrated for years to come.
