Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass recently hinted at a potential reunion with bandmate Jack Black, sharing a post on Instagram that suggests a comeback might be on the way. This comes after the band went on hiatus following a controversial statement by Gass during a live show, which led to the cancellation of their remaining tour dates.

In his post, Gass shared an old photograph of himself and Jack Black, accompanied by a caption hinting at their return.

“Don’t call it a comeback, call it a —,” Gass wrote.

Fans quickly reacted to the post, with one commenting, “End of a hiatus.” Another fan pointed out the timing of the post, writing, “3 more days till the 25th anniversary of the Debut!!!! pretty excited.”

Another supporter expressed their thoughts on the situation between the bandmates, commenting, “You are a good man for forgiving Jack after he threw you under the bus. He could have just let it blow over and all would be fine. Musicians and comedians should not be held to a higher standard than the president.”

The band has not officially announced any upcoming tour dates or projects yet.

The fan reaction makes more sense when viewed against the events that put the duo on ice in the first place. The fallout began in July 2024 during a Tenacious D show in Australia, when Black presented Gass with a birthday cake onstage and asked him to “make a wish.” Gass responded with a joke about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, saying, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

The remark, made just weeks after a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, drew immediate backlash. Black responded by calling off the remainder of the band’s sold-out tour and placing “all future creative plans on hold.”

Black addressed the situation directly in a statement shared on social media, which quickly became the defining moment of the split.

“I was blindsided by what was said during the show on Sunday,” Black said. “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.”

The timing of Gass’ new post is notable for another reason, as the band’s debut record approaches a major milestone. Tenacious D’s self-titled debut album was released on September 25, 2001, peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard 200, spent 43 weeks on the chart, and went gold in July 2002 before reaching platinum status by November 2005.

That timeline gives the fan comment about the “25th anniversary of the Debut” real weight, with the milestone landing just days after Gass’ cryptic post. The album arrived via Epic Records and has since become the foundation of the duo’s comedy rock catalog, despite mixed reviews at the time of its release.

Even so, there has been no confirmation that a reunion is actually in motion. Gass said earlier this year that the band is “still on hiatus,” while Black has not announced any formal reunion plans. Neither has confirmed a return to full-time collaboration.

For now, Gass’ post remains just a hint, and fans will have to wait to see whether the “comeback” he teased becomes something more official.
