John 5 shared his perspective on the most influential guitarists in music history during an appearance on Lipps Service. His selection spans multiple generations of music, from traditional country to modern progressive metal.

“I’m gonna say if we do it like where they really changed music. And I think Chet Atkins is someone… Because that or Merle Travis. That kind of style that was never done before. I think that’s a big one,” John 5 explained.

“Of course, Jimi Hendrix changed everything and made everything explode. Of course, Eddie Van Halen changed everything,” he continued. “And then, another guitar player that really changed a lot was Yngwie Malmsteen. It’s something where it’s like a total for epiphany for everybody. It’s never been done before. It’s totally changed everything.”

“And I’m gonna say Tosin Abasi. Because his style is so different from anything that’s been done before,” he concluded, rounding out his top five selections.

Each mentioned artist represents a unique contribution to the evolution of guitar music. John 5’s diverse selection reflects his own versatile approach to guitar playing.
