K.K. Downing says he feels a greater responsibility to keep Judas Priest’s music alive onstage following Ian Hill’s retirement. Speaking on Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, the guitarist reflected on his connection to the band’s songs and promised a busy touring schedule with KK’s Priest.
Asked whether Hill’s departure added to his sense of responsibility as a founding member, Downing pointed to the personal importance of the band he helped build.
“I think the answer to that is kind of… even though it’s been dropped on me at a great height, but I think the answer to that would be yes, I think, really, because, like I say, I started this band so long ago, and it became my dream and my passion and my life. And I always wanted it to keep on going, if it was at all possible.”
For Downing, performing that music with KK’s Priest maintains a connection to his years in Judas Priest. He explained that playing the songs still feels familiar, while praising the musicians who now share the stage with him.
“And that’s kind of where we’re at. And I think every time I go out there, like tonight we’ll go out [with KK’s Priest], then I’ll play with the guys, I’ll be playing these songs, for me, nothing’s really changed. It’s great players, looking great, performing great and playing these great songs. And so I think I’m in a really, really happy place.”
Downing also made clear that fans will have more opportunities to hear those songs live. Although he did not detail specific dates in these remarks, he described a heavy schedule ahead and invited listeners to join the band.
“Well, we’ve got a very heavy schedule, so I’ll be out there. I’d love to see everyone again if they wanna come down and check out, obviously, some classic Priest riffs and songs and sing along with us. Everyone’s more than welcome.”
His comments place the focus on continuing to perform the music that shaped his career. Following Hill’s retirement, Downing sees KK’s Priest as his way of keeping that connection alive through concerts and shared moments with fans.
