Matt Heafy has emphasized that Trivium’s completed album features mature songwriting and represents a departure from their previous work, he told Kerrang. Online fans have voiced skepticism about the band’s released singles and questioned the frontman’s extensive praise of the unreleased material.
Heafy spoke about the album’s completion and his eagerness to share it with listeners. He also discussed the songwriting approach on the record and how it compares to Trivium’s previous releases.
“The album is 100 per cent recorded, mixed, mastered, ready to go,” Heafy said. “The record is all done, and it’s amazing. Now I’m just itching to get it out and for people to listen. It was pretty much done before the festival run this summer. We really wanted to play the new stuff at those shows, like Download, but we knew it wasn’t time yet. So, we’ve had to sit on it. We’re sitting on our best material of all time and we’re not able to play it yet. I’m really excited for when we’re actually able to show people what we’ve done. It’s a lot to look forward to.”
“Every record we’ve ever released, I’ve always said, ‘This is our best record,'” he continued. “But this time there’s something different with it. Maturity-wise, these are definitely the best songs we’ve ever written. Strip away the production, technicality and riffs, boil it down to an acoustic song with a vocal, and it’s still the best-sounding stuff we’ve ever had. Of course, it’s very ‘us’, but I think that’s the best way I can really describe it right now with it being so fresh. This one, it’s all about the songs. It’s all about having the biggest songs we’ve ever managed to write, and there’s so much intricacy within the simplicity on this. I don’t want to give away anything in terms of comparing it to records by any means. But, I guess as exciting or enraging as this may be, it’s not like anything we’ve ever done before, either, while still feeling like us.”
Heafy’s comments have prompted mixed reactions from fans online. Some questioned whether the album could match his praise, particularly given their reaction to the singles released so far.
One fan wrote: “If it’s anything like the two singles I’m not too optimistic.”
Another responded: “Yea, but the first 2 singles are undeniably boring. Are you sure you are writing the best material?”
A third added: “If you have to talk up your album this much, it’s probably not worth the talk lol.”
Heafy made these remarks as Trivium prepares to release their new album. The band has yet to announce an official release date for the record.
Crown in the Grave arrives on November 20 through Roadrunner Records. The album marks Trivium’s first full-length with new drummer Alex Rudinger, who replaced Alex Bent in October 2025. Rudinger was previously the drummer for Whitechapel. The band recorded the material at their creative hub, The Hangar, in Orlando, Florida, working with producer Mark Lewis.
The LP follows Trivium’s 2021 album In the Court of the Dragon and last year’s three-song EP Struck Dead. Trivium released the title track “Crown in the Grave” as the lead single, with “Dead Inside of Me” following as additional new music from the forthcoming eleventh studio album. The record represents the band’s first new full-length material since their previous release five years ago.
Trivium are preparing for a fall North American tour that features In Flames, Orbit Culture, Fit for an Autopsy, and Frozen Soul. The tour comes as the band enters a new chapter with their updated lineup and fresh material ready for fans to hear.
