Testament frontman Chuck Billy has cut his long hair after being inspired by Jerry Cantrell’s recent haircut decision. Billy shared videos of the transformation on Instagram, explaining what motivated the change.
Billy documented the moment he decided to make the cut and revealed that he had worn his hair long for nearly his entire life, with the exception of a period when he was ill with cancer. In the videos, he described the haircut as a fresh start.
In his first video, Billy said: “All right. Here I am getting a haircut. I’ve had long hair my whole life except for when I was ill with cancer. But today, I think, is the day. It’s gonna be a new look. So here we go.”
After the cut was complete, he added: “All right, well… here it is. The new Chuck. 2026, starting fresh and new. I don’t know, do I look more grown up now? I don’t know. Feel pretty good, feel a little lighter.”
Billy then explained the inspiration behind his decision in a follow-up video. “Hey, what’s going on everybody? You got the news today of my new haircut. I just wanted to tell you the reason and the inspiration behind it. I seen Jerry Cantrell post two days ago I believe with his haircut, and it gave me the strength and energy and the nerve to cut it all off. So thank you Jerry, this one’s to you man. Thanks for the courage. Cheers,” he said.
The haircut prompted some fans to make joking comments on the posts. One fan wrote, “Welcome Back Hugo Chavez.”
Billy’s decision to cut his hair marks a significant personal change for the Testament frontman. The transformation sparked conversation among his followers online.
Billy has a long personal history with health challenges. In 2001, he was diagnosed with germ cell seminoma, a rare type of cancer that appeared in his chest region near his heart. He became cancer-free by 2002, and he has since decided to share his full story in a memoir titled Holding My Breath, scheduled for publication on November 10, 2026. The book includes contributions from Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, who wrote the foreword, and Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe, who wrote the afterword.
Cantrell’s own decision to cut his hair came on October 30, 2026, when he was spotted backstage at the Aerosmith & Friends concert at the Hollywood Bowl with a closely cropped look. Cantrell had worn his blonde hair long since his late teenage years throughout much of Alice in Chains’ history. His new shorter style is similar to cuts he wore in 2011 and 2013 during promotion of The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here album. After growing his hair back out again in 2017, Cantrell had maintained the long blonde look that became one of his trademarks.
When Cantrell first cut his hair in 2011, he faced unexpected backlash from fans and others who reacted strongly to the change. At the time, he pushed back on the negative response by saying that he was still himself and that at 52 years old, it was nice to know he could still grow a full head of hair.
Testament released their latest studio album, Para Bellum, on October 10, 2025, before Billy’s haircut transformation captured the attention of fans in late 2026.
