Journey frontman Arnel Pineda has issued a public statement addressing racist and hateful comments directed at him on social media. The criticism has largely stemmed from comparisons between Pineda and the band’s original vocalist Steve Perry.

“To Whom It May Concern, dear bashers, racists, bigots & hateful people, pls take your negativities and unkind words against me somewhere else coz you are not completely welcome on my page,” Pineda said. “I get it, you love the original members with The Voice in it. I love that too.”

“But life happened & it is what it is right now. No need to be unkind just cause you are exercising your so called freedom of speech rights. That being said, doesn’t make you good human beings. Again, KINDNESS is cheap, and yet, obviously, you can’t afford to share it to others like me.”

Pineda concluded by urging detractors to cease their harassment: “Again, don’t come to my page if your only intention is to hate me. Go somewhere else, where you truly belong.”

The Filipino vocalist’s statement reflects years of persistent online harassment that extends far beyond simple artistic criticism. Pineda has endured a sustained campaign of racist abuse targeting not only his vocal abilities but his ethnicity, accent, and appearance. The harassment has included offensive mockery of his Filipino heritage and derogatory comments about his accent. Racially insensitive caricatures have no place in civil discourse.

Comparisons to Steve Perry, whose iconic voice defined Journey’s early success, have become a vehicle for xenophobic attacks rather than legitimate artistic debate. Critics have leveled accusations that the band’s decision to bring in Pineda represented an “outsourcing” move disrespecting the band’s American roots. This framing carries unmistakable undertones of xenophobia. Some detractors have fabricated false claims about Pineda’s nationality and background, spreading misinformation across social media platforms. These attacks go well beyond questioning his vocal range or stage presence. They constitute a coordinated effort to delegitimize his presence in the band based on his race and national origin.

Despite the relentless negativity, Pineda has demonstrated remarkable resilience and dignity in his response. Rather than engaging with the trolls on their terms, he has chosen to set clear boundaries and assert his right to perform with Journey without tolerating abuse. His message reflects a broader frustration with how online spaces have become venues for unchecked racism and harassment. Anonymity emboldens people to express sentiments they would never voice in person. The statement serves as both a personal boundary and a broader indictment of the toxic culture that has developed around comparisons between him and his predecessor.

The situation underscores a persistent challenge in the music industry and popular culture: the difficulty faced by artists from non-Western backgrounds in gaining acceptance and respect. While many fans have defended Pineda and praised his emotional delivery, stage presence, and ability to carry Journey’s legacy forward, the vocal minority of racist critics has created a hostile environment. Pineda’s willingness to speak out publicly about this harassment sends an important message that such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated, regardless of how it is framed or justified.
