Sepultura frontman Derrick Green has opened up about the band’s decision to launch their farewell tour. The continuous cycle of creating, recording, and touring had become increasingly robotic and tedious. Green explained that the band chose to call it quits on their own terms and on a high note rather than wait for circumstances to force a breakup.
“I think all of our lives are constantly changing and evolving and moving, and so your mindset also changes,” Green stated. “With us, the cycle of creating and then recording and then touring can be like a vicious cycle. It’s an incredible cycle, but we’ve done it for so many years.”
The frontman emphasized that as artists, the band felt compelled to challenge themselves creatively. “When the creative process becomes very robotic and the same, then it becomes more of a ‘job job’,” Green explained. “As artists, it’s important for us to really step outside the box and challenge ourselves in everything that we do, especially when it comes to creating.”
The band has always been driven by a passion for music rather than obligation. “We’ve always been involved in music for other aspects, for the love of the art, and not just because we have to do it,” Green said. “When it starts to become very robotic and the same and tedious, then I think it’s time for us to re-evaluate where we’re at, and that’s what we did.”
The band conducted a thorough re-evaluation and reached a unanimous decision. “We all agreed that it made more sense to stop on our own accord and to stop on a very high note,” Green reflected. “In order to wait for something bad to happen or to break down, in order to break up or to stop moving, it just didn’t make sense to us.”
Sepultura’s farewell tour, titled “Celebrating Life Through Death,” represents a celebration of the band’s extraordinary legacy. The Brazilian metal legends initially announced plans for the farewell tour in 2024, with the journey extending across multiple continents. The band’s current lineup features Green on vocals, guitarist Andreas Kisser, bassist Paulo Jr., and drummer Greyson Nekrutman, who officially joined the group in February 2024.
The European leg of the farewell tour launched on June 6, 2026, in the Netherlands. The band has been traversing major festivals and venues across the continent. They performed at Hellfest in France on June 19 and Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium on June 20. The band is scheduled to appear at Wacken Open Air in Germany on July 29. The final European show is set for August 9, 2026, at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.
The band’s decision to extend their farewell tour until 2026 reflects their commitment to giving fans worldwide a proper goodbye. Originally planned to conclude in 2024, the extended timeline allows Sepultura to reach more cities and celebrate their four decades of influence on the metal community. The final show ever will take place on November 7, 2026, at the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu in São Paulo, Brazil, bringing the band’s journey full circle in their homeland.
Beyond the farewell performances, Sepultura is commemorating this chapter with a live album documenting their final series of shows. A new EP is scheduled for 2026 featuring four tracks recorded with the current lineup. These releases will serve as lasting testaments to the band’s enduring creative spirit and their ability to maintain artistic integrity throughout their career.
“It just ran its course, and we’re happy to celebrate everything, all the achievements and all the years that have been created with Sepultura,” Green concluded. “This is something that is not necessarily to feel sad about, but again, a celebration with all our fans and traveling around the world doing that and this final goodbye.”
