Rush frontman Geddy Lee has opened up about the meticulous preparation required for the band’s reunion tour. He detailed a humorous setlist compromise made to accommodate drummer Anika Nilles’ demanding technical requirements. According to Lee, the band recently attempted to add a complex new song to their setlist, but Nilles’ response was immediate and emphatic.

“We added one song, one extra song recently. And she freaked out,” Lee explained. “I knew she would freak out, but she freaked out. She said, ‘My hard drive is full.’ And this song has a lot of complicated time signature changes.”

The solution came through negotiation. “We made a deal. We pulled two songs out in exchange for this one song. She said, ‘Okay.’ [Laughs] But she’s up for it. And that’s a very difficult seat to sit in,” Lee continued.

Lee also praised Nilles for her courage in accepting the role. He acknowledged the unique challenges she faces as the new drummer for a band with such a legendary legacy. “Some people will never forgive us for going on with somebody else. And she has the guts to sit in that seat, to accept that gig and take whatever fans are gonna dish out. That’s not a small thing. That’s a huge thing. And it’s not out of arrogance. It’s out of confidence and respect for Neil.”

Lee emphasized that bringing in Nilles was never about diminishing the memory of the band’s original drummer, Neil Peart, who passed away in 2020. Rick Beato’s interview revealed that Lee made it clear Nilles’ involvement represents a continuation of Rush’s legacy rather than a replacement of it. “When you hear her talk about Neil, she really understands and appreciates his greatness. None of this that happens is diminishing his greatness by one iota,” Lee stated.

This perspective reflects the band’s thoughtful approach to moving forward while respecting the foundation that Peart built over decades with Rush. Nilles’ deep appreciation for Peart’s contributions to drumming and music history appears to be a key factor in her selection for this significant role.

Anika Nilles has established herself as one of the most technically proficient drummers in contemporary music. She is known for her ability to handle complex time signatures and intricate rhythmic patterns. Her selection for the Rush reunion tour speaks to her credentials as a musician capable of interpreting and performing some of the most challenging drum parts in rock history. The setlist negotiation that Lee described underscores the technical demands that Rush’s catalog presents. In that negotiation, Nilles expressed concern about her preparation capacity for an additional song with complicated time signature changes.

Her willingness to engage in creative problem-solving with the band demonstrates both her professionalism and her commitment to delivering the best possible performance for Rush fans. The compromise to swap songs reflects this dedication.

Taking on the drummer’s role in Rush is no ordinary task. The band has been a cornerstone of progressive rock for over five decades. Neil Peart’s drumming innovations influenced generations of musicians. Nilles’ acceptance of this position reflects her confidence in her abilities and her respect for the band’s history, despite knowing the scrutiny she would face from devoted Rush fans.

Lee’s comments suggest that the band recognizes the emotional complexity of this transition. They appreciate Nilles’ willingness to navigate it with grace and dedication. As Rush prepares for their reunion tour, Nilles’ meticulous approach to the setlist and her technical mastery position her as a worthy steward of the band’s percussive legacy.
