John Bush has made it clear that he harbors no resentment over other vocalists achieving greater commercial success. He emphasizes that he is incredibly proud of Armored Saint’s longevity and values artistic passion over stadium-level fame. In a recent interview, the Armored Saint frontman explained his perspective on the band’s place within the metal hierarchy, refusing to measure their achievements against industry titans.
“Well, I don’t want it to sound like I have any sour grapes or anything like that, because I don’t. I really don’t,” Bush stated. “I think that we’re [Armored Saint] very fortunate that here we are, we’re still making music in 2026 after the band basically began 41, 42 years ago. So for us to still be able to do that is quite an achievement, and I’m super proud of that.”
Bush’s philosophy reflects a mature understanding of the music industry’s inherent inequalities. “Nobody said life’s fair. You’re in the rock and roll music industry. Nobody said everybody’s gonna have equal level of success here. No. Nobody said that. So, everybody’s got different levels of success, and really the majority of people who’ve made music probably didn’t get to that level of success,” he explained. “I don’t wanna measure it based on Metallica or Iron Maiden, because they’re the top, and really very few bands will ever get there. Forget metal — any band for that matter. Then there’s the lower tier, and then there’s a tier below that and stuff. But at the end of the day, you do it because you love it, really, and I think that that’s the driving force behind it.”
Armored Saint has built a legacy defined by longevity, artistic integrity, and steady success within the metal world. Since their 1984 debut with March of the Saint, the band has maintained a presence in heavy metal that few acts achieve. Most bands never reach the stratospheric heights of their most famous peers, a reality that Bush’s perspective underscores.
Bush’s commitment to quality over commercial conquest has been a defining characteristic of Armored Saint’s approach. The band has consistently prioritized the quality of their music and performances over chasing mainstream outcomes. This philosophy has allowed them to work on their own terms and at their own pace, supported by a loyal fanbase and the backing of Metal Blade Records. The band continues to create legitimate, high-quality music decades after their formation.
In 2026, Armored Saint continues to tour and record, including festival dates and special runs. Bush himself has evolved into a multi-faceted presence within heavy metal. He remains active with other projects such as Metal Allegiance and his “John Bush Plays Anthrax” shows, which celebrate his influential decade with Anthrax. This diversified approach has transformed his career into a sustained, multi-faceted presence in heavy metal rather than a single-era flash in the pan.
The band’s recent work, including their ninth studio album Emotion Factory Reset, continues to showcase their commitment to artistic growth and creative evolution. Bush and bassist Joey Vera have repeatedly emphasized that long-term survival and creative growth matter far more than chasing mainstream fame. This philosophy has guided Armored Saint through four decades of the music industry’s constant shifts and challenges.
