Former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman has highlighted the crucial role of late drummer Nick Menza in the band’s rise to mainstream success, saying in an interview with La Pajarera that his drumming style was a key factor in their breakthrough.

Friedman discussed how Menza’s approach to drumming helped Megadeth break out of the underground thrash metal scene. He explained that Menza’s playing differed from typical thrash metal drumming and featured a more musical, mainstream approach.

“I think a lot of people might not realize that a big reason why Megadeth became as popular in the mainstream as we did was because of Nick,” Friedman said. “Nick’s playing is not a typical thrash metal drummer style. It’s very mainstream. If you take the drums on its own, it’s very musical, and there’s not a lot of heavy metal clichés.”

Friedman emphasized how Menza’s drumming combined with the band’s other elements, particularly Dave Mustaine’s riffs, to create their distinctive sound. “So that combination with the rest of us in the band, and, of course, [Megadeth guitarist/vocalist] Dave Mustaine’s riffs and all that stuff, Nick’s way of providing the beat is a huge reason why we weren’t just kind of an underground thrash metal band,” he continued. “His playing elevated us to stadium level. So I think people should know that about Nick.”

Friedman’s comments came as he reflected on the musical contributions that shaped Megadeth’s career and sound.

Nick Menza died at age 51 in 2016 from a heart attack while performing onstage with his band Ohm at The Baked Potato in Los Angeles. Before his death, he had been recognized as one of metal’s most meticulous and versatile drummers, known for his precision and dynamic playing style. Menza joined Megadeth in 1989 and remained with the band for nine years before health issues forced his departure in 1998.

Menza played drums on four of Megadeth’s studio albums: Rust in Peace (1990), Countdown to Extinction (1992), Youthanasia (1994), and Cryptic Writings (1997). Rust in Peace brought the band to mainstream metal attention and became an instant classic. Countdown to Extinction entered the Billboard 200 at number two and eventually achieved double platinum status, becoming the band’s most commercially successful album at the time and leading to sold-out arena tours across North America and strong international followings.

Menza’s contributions to these landmark records helped define the sound of 1990s metal. His approach brought vast amounts of dynamism and precision to the band’s thrash metal sound, setting a benchmark against which other mainstream metal bands would measure themselves. Friedman’s recent comments underscore how central Menza’s drumming was to Megadeth’s transformation from underground act to stadium-level success during that era.
