Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme openly challenged venue rules during the band’s recent performance at Ford Field in Detroit, criticizing corporate restrictions before smoking a cigarette onstage despite the venue’s no-smoking policy.
Queens of the Stone Age were performing as an opening act for Foo Fighters when Homme turned his attention to the rules inside the stadium. During the show, the singer and guitarist delivered an angry speech encouraging fans not to let corporations control their behavior.
Homme told the crowd: “Don’t let these f*cking corporate assholes tell you what to do; do whatever the f*ck you want. F*ck that sh*t.” He continued: “You paid for parking, and you’re paying for overpriced drinks, these f*cking scalpers. F*ck having some corporation tell you what the fuck to do, you guys do what you want! And f*ck Flock cameras too.”
The frontman then took his protest a step further by smoking a cigarette onstage. Ford Field has a no-smoking policy, meaning Homme’s decision directly challenged the venue’s rules in front of the crowd.
According to reports surrounding the incident, the move potentially exposed Homme to a fine of as much as $10,000. However, it remains unclear whether any penalty was ultimately issued as a result of his actions.
The moment quickly became more than simply a dispute over smoking. Homme framed the restriction as part of a wider frustration with the increasingly corporate nature of major live events, particularly when fans are already spending significant amounts on tickets, parking, drinks, and other expenses.
