Triumph guitarist Rik Emmett shared his thoughts on the current political climate in America during a recent interview with WNST. The Canadian musician addressed potential reactions from Canadian sports fans toward American teams. He specifically focused on the upcoming Blue Jays-Orioles series.
“The Republicans in your country are offensive people, and they’re being offensive to the rest of the world,” Emmett stated. “I love the fact that there are Americans that don’t agree with that, but we are gonna be defensive. And yes, your [Baltimore] Orioles [baseball team are gonna get a little bit of that [when they play the Toronto Blue Jays this week]. They might hear some booing of your national anthem and stuff.”
“It’s not that I don’t love what America stands for. The greatest part of my career happened because of the support of Americans,” he continued. “They’re still the largest amount of fans that I have.”
“But whatever happened to the America of Lady Liberty? Whatever happened to the America that had an open mind and an open heart and open arms?” Emmett added. “Like, come on! That’s a thing that’s — it’s gone now, and it’s something to regret.”
Emmett’s comments emerge during an active period in his career. He continues to build upon decades of success in both Canadian and American markets.
Musical Legacy

Glide Magazine highlights Triumph’s remarkable success on both sides of the border. The band’s hits like ‘Lay It On The Line’ and ‘Never Surrender’ became essential rock radio classics.
The band made a significant impact on the rock scene. However, Ultimate Classic Rock notes their struggle for institutional recognition. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has notably overlooked their contributions.
Current Projects

Baltimore Positive documents Emmett’s latest creative ventures. His ’10 Telecaster Tales’ project combines musical performance with personal storytelling.
This innovative format demonstrates Emmett’s artistic evolution. He maintains strong connections with audiences across North America through this new approach.
Cross-Border Relations

Emmett’s recent statements reflect the broader context of US-Canada relations. Political differences have created new tensions between these longtime allies.
His commentary contributes to an ongoing dialogue about changing cross-border relationships. He balances criticism of current politics with genuine appreciation for his American fan base.
