Joe Satriani has shared surprising insights about working with Yngwie Malmsteen in a recent interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine. Satriani’s experience with Malmsteen during the G3 tour revealed an unexpected side of the Swedish guitarist.
“I remember when we had Yngwie out with us, I was really surprised how well he did because he’s a real dynamic solo performer,” Satriani said. “When Yngwie takes the stage, it’s just Yngwie. So he doesn’t really have a long history of being in a whole bunch of bands jamming with lots of people. But he’s actually quite good at it.”
The collaboration occurred during one of Satriani’s G3 concert tours. The tour format traditionally features three prominent guitarists performing together. This experience revealed a fascinating chapter in the history of these legendary guitarists’ interactions.
Historic G3 Tour Collaboration

Guitar World reports that the collaboration took place during the 2003 G3 tour. The lineup brought together an extraordinary combination of Satriani, Malmsteen, and Steve Vai.
The tour launched with a special video greeting on October 17, 2003. All three guitarists participated in the announcement, generating excitement for this landmark event in guitar-focused concerts.
Behind-the-Scenes Dynamics

Louder Sound reveals that Malmsteen’s participation required specific considerations. Satriani approached the collaboration pragmatically, stating, “If you invite him, you have to just say: ‘I know what I’m inviting.'”
The tour demonstrated unexpected camaraderie among the performers. The guitarists created memorable moments together. They once appeared on stage wearing robes and holding candles during John Petrucci’s set.
G3 Tour Legacy

This successful collaboration enhanced the rich history of the G3 tour. The tour concept began in 1996 with Satriani, Vai, and Eric Johnson, according to Ultimate Guitar.
Satriani now focuses on reuniting with the original G3 lineup. These unique collaborations have strengthened the tour’s enduring legacy in the guitar community.
