Alex Van Halen has shed light on the decision to bring his nephew Wolfgang Van Halen into the band as bassist instead of longtime member Michael Anthony. In a recent interview, the legendary drummer revealed that the band did attempt to contact Anthony before making the switch. He did not respond to their call.
“Ed and I, as usual, were in the studio alone, because nobody else tolerated it, they’d rather be at the beach! I’ve got news for you, you’ve gotta work for this shit,” Alex explained. “Nobody showed up, and one day Ed and I were playing and this bass comes in, and it had a nice feel to it. And behind the curtain it was Wolf.”
The drummer emphasized that they made a genuine effort to include Anthony in their plans. “For the record we did call Mike, because we owed him that. We did call him, and he just didn’t answer,” Alex stated. He clarified that the decision wasn’t made lightly or without attempting to reach out to the original bassist.
Alex also praised Wolfgang’s approach to his role within the band. His nephew was determined to forge his own identity rather than simply replicate his father Eddie’s legacy. “Wolf’s very careful that he doesn’t want to be Ed Jr. He was in a very tough spot, meaning he could have just continued with the Van Halen stuff, but he decided he was his own man,” Alex said.
The drummer expressed genuine pride in Wolfgang’s accomplishments and artistic independence. “Everything that he’s done – I’m very proud of him, by the way. That’s probably not the right thing to say about an adult, he’s [35] years old! You shouldn’t be proud of an adult, right… That’s what you do to your children!” Alex remarked with a touch of humor.
Alex’s comments provide important context for understanding the internal dynamics that shaped Van Halen’s final chapter. Blabbermouth reported that Michael Anthony himself has acknowledged Eddie and Alex Van Halen shared an exceptionally close brotherly bond. This bond was unlike any relationship he had witnessed. This tight-knit partnership between the two brothers meant that major creative decisions were often made between them. Sometimes other band members were left on the periphery of the decision-making process.
The exclusivity of Eddie and Alex’s working relationship was a defining characteristic of Van Halen’s creative process. Anthony’s recollection of this dynamic helps explain why the bassist may not have been immediately consulted when the brothers decided to bring Wolfgang into the fold. The studio sessions that produced the final Van Halen material were largely confined to the Van Halen brothers. This reflected a pattern that had defined much of the band’s later work.
Despite the circumstances surrounding Wolfgang’s entry into Van Halen, the relationship between the younger bassist and Michael Anthony has remained warm and familial. Arrow Lords of Metal documented that Wolfgang and Michael reconnected meaningfully at a Mammoth WVH concert in Las Vegas on December 8, 2023. This reunion occurred after more than two decades apart. Wolfgang expressed his affection for Anthony during that reunion, stating, “He’s family. It was long overdue.”
The reconnection between Wolfgang and Anthony demonstrated that despite the professional circumstances that led to Anthony’s departure from Van Halen, there was no lasting personal animosity between them. Michael Anthony attended the concert with Valerie Bertinelli and later described the experience as providing “a lot of closure” for him. Both men understood the complex circumstances that had led to the band’s lineup change. They were able to move past any hurt feelings.
The decision to bring Wolfgang into Van Halen as bassist was part of a larger evolution within the band during its final period. Sonic Perspectives revealed that Michael Anthony had heard through Wolfgang that a large-scale reunion involving all the classic members was being discussed at one point. However, Eddie Van Halen’s mindset at the time was focused on moving forward rather than revisiting the past. This ultimately prevented such a reunion from materializing.
