Daron Malakian’s “Us vs Them” Message Contrasts With James Hetfield’s Call for Apolitical Concert

Daron Malakian of System of a Down took a political stance onstage, arguing that voters across the political spectrum are ignored by their government, posted on Instagram. His approach stands in sharp contrast to James Hetfield’s recent position that Metallica aims to keep their shows free from political messaging.

Malakian addressed the crowd about the current debate over whether bands should take political positions during concerts. His comments framed the issue in terms of power rather than traditional left-right politics.

“There’s been a lot of debate lately, to be political, to not be political,” Malakian said. “The bottom line is this: whether you vote red or blue, your government doesn’t give a fuck about you.”

Fans responding to the video offered their own interpretations of his stance. One viewer wrote: “This message isn’t making him ‘neutral’ or ‘not taking a stance’. It’s all about realizing that it’s not red vs blue. It’s about realizing it’s us vs them. That right there is a definitive stance, and isn’t being ‘neutral on a moving train’ like these people in these comments upset that he isn’t reinforcing their political echo chambers.”

Another fan compared the two bands’ approaches to concert messaging. One said: “if Metallica wanted to create a night without politics they would have just played music without talking about anything.”

A third added simply: “Mid take but better than Hetfield.”

Hetfield has previously explained Metallica’s philosophy onstage in different terms. “Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their bullshit,” Hetfield said. “Okay? We are here… no bullshit… we’re here to forget about all the outside shit, okay? Metallica’s agenda is love, energy and heavy music, baby!”

The two frontmen’s statements reflect a wider debate in rock and metal about whether bands should use their platforms for political commentary during live shows.

Hetfield made his latest comments during Metallica’s Life Burns Faster residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, which continues through March 2027. The Metallica frontman has held this view for many years. In 2007, he explained his stance to La Tercera, saying his personal opinions stay separate from his work because connecting people with music matters more to him than discussing politics or religion, which he believes divide people.

System of a Down has taken the opposite approach since their early days. The band’s sophomore album, Toxicity, came out on September 4, 2001, one week before the September 11 attacks, and the political climate shaped how listeners responded to the album’s themes. Songs like “B.Y.O.B.” directly criticized the Iraq War and war profiteering, showing the band’s long commitment to activism. In 2026, Malakian told people to stop letting media and government divide them, saying that if the band could be onstage together with different beliefs, audiences could do the same.

Within System of a Down, the members themselves hold different political views. Drummer John Dolmayan has praised President Donald Trump for “bringing a little sanity back,” while Malakian speaks out against politicians starting unnecessary wars but remains open to conversation. Despite these differences, Malakian’s message about unity against those in power suggests the band can bridge their own internal divides while addressing audiences.

The question of whether musicians should use their platforms for political speech has grown sharper across the industry. In September 2026, English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran removed American rapper Macklemore from his Loop Tour as a supporting act after Macklemore made pro-Palestine statements during two performances in New Jersey. Pressure from pro-Israel advocacy groups and venue owners, including American businessman Robert Kraft, led to the removal. Macklemore responded by stating “Being apolitical during a genocide doesn’t work anymore” and called on artists to use the stage to push back when free speech is met with attempts to silence it.
