Aaron Hagar issued a fierce and emotionally charged statement on Instagram to defend his father, legendary rock musician Sammy Hagar, against ongoing political backlash surrounding the canceled Freedom 250 event. He slammed online trolls for their lack of fact-checking and reaffirmed that the performance was strictly intended as a patriotic plea for national unity rather than a political endorsement.

“Ok, enough with all this hate and bullshit people! What is wrong with you? I think it was pretty clear that Dad was using this platform to speak his mind and unify our country! HE was not there for political reasons! I think we know what he meant!” Aaron wrote in his passionate defense.

He continued with visible frustration about the ongoing criticism. “I thought it came out perfectly clear, but once again the hate and opportunity that some people have taken to tear him down has angered me beyond words! I keep my peace and I am a VERY tolerant man, but enough is enough!! STOP IT!”

Aaron urged critics to reconsider their positions through verification and compassion. “Take a minute and fact check yourselves, take a minute and look at the history, take a minute and just be kind!! It’s completely out of hand and now I’m taking this shit very personally! ENOUGH!!!” he declared.

He then highlighted what he believed was his father’s true message. “THIS is what he was taking the opportunity to say!!! And that is as American, Patriotic and a people loving human being there can be!! See the truth through all this online garbage!!”

The statement included a poignant reflection on his father’s perspective during the controversy. Aaron shared that Sammy has consistently advised the family to maintain hope despite the negativity: “Dad has always said to us through this mess: ‘I know it’s so hard right now to see any truth or kindness, don’t get discouraged, just be hopeful, it will all balance out in time.'”

The controversy surrounding Sammy Hagar’s involvement with Freedom 250 emerged after he shared a rehearsal video on Instagram on July 2. The video sparked immediate backlash from fans who viewed the event as politically aligned with President Donald Trump. The Red Rocker was scheduled to perform at Freedom 250’s “Salute to America” Fourth of July event in Washington, D.C. Thunderstorms ultimately canceled the entire musical portion of the celebration, including performances by Lynyrd Skynyrd and country singer Gretchen Wilson.

Sammy Hagar responded directly to critics, insisting that his participation was apolitical in nature. He emphasized that the event represented a celebration of America’s 250th birthday regardless of who occupied the presidency. In his defense, Hagar shared a handwritten speech he had prepared for the occasion, which called for national unity and reconciliation: “Right now we are celebrating our country’s 250th birthday & right now would be a good time to reunite this country. Come together right now. Stop the violence. Stop the hate. Right now is a good time to show some love & respect to our fellow brothers & sisters. Let’s not be prejudiced. Let’s all come together right now. Remember United We Stand, Divided We Fall. All we need is love! Right here, right now — Happy Birthday, America!”

Freedom 250, the organization behind the event, was formed under President Trump’s direction. This has drawn criticism from various public figures who view the organization as politically partisan. The group has consistently denied allegations of partisanship, stating that Freedom 250 is a nonpartisan organization whose track record demonstrates collaboration across red, blue, and purple states.

Several high-profile musicians had already withdrawn from Freedom 250’s broader 16-day state fair event prior to the Fourth of July celebration. Notable acts including Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, and the Commodores chose not to participate in the expanded Freedom 250 programming, with some citing political concerns as their reason for backing out.

Sammy Hagar identifies as non-partisan and has never officially endorsed Trump or his administration. He has maintained that his involvement was purely about celebrating American independence and promoting unity during a divisive time. His son Aaron’s passionate defense reflects the family’s frustration with what they perceive as a mischaracterization of the musician’s intentions. The family emphasizes that the performance was meant to transcend partisan politics and focus instead on shared national values and patriotic sentiment.
