Billy Corgan Promises A Goth Winter Experience If Smashing Pumpkins Ever Play The Sphere

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has expressed confidence that his band could deliver an unparalleled production at Las Vegas’s iconic Sphere venue, should they ever get the opportunity. Corgan acknowledged the venue’s demanding nature while simultaneously positioning the Pumpkins as uniquely equipped to create something extraordinary within its walls.

“I’m really impressed by anybody who can play the Sphere because it’s a heavy lift. It’s a production thing, and you really have to draw a lot of people,” Corgan said. “So number one, I’m not sure we’re big enough to draw enough people over time to do it. But if somebody came and said, ‘Yeah, we believe you can do it,’ I think the Pumpkins could put on a show that nobody else would put on, because of the theatrical nature of the records and the presentation. And with that level of production, it would be like a goth winter in there, and I think we’re probably the only band that could pull that off at that level.”

Corgan’s remarks reveal both the practical constraints and creative ambitions surrounding a potential Sphere residency. The Sphere’s operational model requires artists to draw substantial audiences across multiple dates to justify the venue’s significant production costs and operational overhead. Corgan noted that the expansion of Sphere venues to other cities like Dubai and London could eventually change this dynamic. “They’re trying to build other Spheres, like in Dubai and London, and I think once that gets online, then I think you’re gonna see the system loosen up of who can play because you’re gonna be able to travel. Right now, you need bands that are big enough to draw multiple, multiple dates to make that whole thing work.”

Despite these reservations about the Pumpkins’ current drawing power, Corgan expressed respect for artists who have successfully navigated the Sphere’s demands. “I’m telling you, mad respect to anybody who’s pulled it off, including Phish,” he added.

The Smashing Pumpkins have not yet been approached by Sphere management about a residency. Corgan’s comments remain speculative at this stage. However, the band’s current touring schedule demonstrates their continued relevance and drawing power. The group is currently on “The Rats in a Cage Tour,” which celebrates the 30th anniversary of their landmark 1995 album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The tour spans 27 North American cities throughout fall 2026. Additionally, the Pumpkins have a confirmed Las Vegas date scheduled for October 30, 2026, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, though this remains separate from any potential Sphere involvement.

Corgan has previously expressed enthusiasm about creating a special production centered on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness for a major venue. His vision extends beyond a standard concert performance, drawing inspiration from his operatic reimagining of the album with the Lyric Opera in Chicago. Such an ambitious production concept would align with the theatrical scale and technical capabilities that the Sphere offers. This could potentially create the immersive “goth winter” experience Corgan envisions. For now, the prospect of Smashing Pumpkins at the Sphere remains a tantalizing possibility rather than a confirmed booking. Any such arrangement would be contingent on both the venue’s interest and the band’s ability to commit to the extensive residency format the venue requires.
