Metallica frontman James Hetfield has explained why Turnstile declined an invitation to open for the band on tour, speaking on Riff Life radio show. According to Hetfield, the Baltimore post-hardcore band said no because they are already doing well on their own.
Hetfield was asked about the failed offer and what he thinks of Turnstile as a live act. He explained that Metallica had wanted to bring the younger band along but understood their decision.
“We have seen them [Turnstile] live, we wanted to get them on tour, and they said no,” Hetfield said. “They’re doing good on their own already.”
Despite Turnstile’s rejection, Hetfield spoke highly of their live energy and stage presence. “But man, what a vibe they bring. They are so fun. Go see them play if you can. Just like many, many bands, they sound great on their records and recordings, but man, when you see them live, you totally get it.”
Hetfield also praised the band members themselves. “We’ve hung out with them a bit. Super cool guys, super fun. They’ve got a gal in the band now playing, which is fun.”
Hetfield’s comments came during a discussion about Metallica’s approach to booking support acts for their tours.
Turnstile’s decision to pass on the offer reflects their strong position in the music industry. The Baltimore band released their fifth album Never Enough on June 6, 2025 via Roadrunner, their first with guitarist Meg Mills, who joined as a permanent member after touring with the group. The album earned major recognition, with Turnstile winning the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their song “Birds” and Best Rock Album on February 1, 2026.
The band’s momentum extends beyond the new album. Never Enough inspired a remix project called Never Enough: Versions featuring artists like Hayley Williams and Elton John. Turnstile also ran a fall 2025 tour with rotating guests including Amyl & The Sniffers, Blood Orange, and Mannequin Pussy, along with SPEED and Jane Remover on all dates, demonstrating their ability to headline major tours on their own.
Metallica’s M72 world tour expanded into 2026 with European dates running from May 9 in Athens, Greece, through July 5 in London. The tour featured support from metal acts including Gojira and Knocked Loose on most dates, with Pantera and Avatar opening some No Repeat Weekend shows. Hetfield’s willingness to discuss Turnstile’s decision to decline their own offer shows respect for the younger band’s independent trajectory and growing stature.
