W.A.S.P. frontman Blackie Lawless has explained why former guitarist Chris Holmes could no longer be part of the band. Lawless said their split was ultimately driven by different musical directions.

“Chris is a great performer. But he — let’s just put it this way, that he wasn’t able to do musically the things that I wanted to do later on. And it really was reaching a point of saturation where… You hear the old expression, ‘Well, we split up because of musical differences.’ Well, it really was that.”

“I mean, at the end of the day, if you look at it, that’s what it was. Because I wanted to go into an area to do things that, to try, especially… Well, once we did [1989’s] ‘The Headless Children’, I’d gone as far as I could go. To ask him to do [1992’s] ‘The Crimson Idol’, to be Bob Kulick? No. And that’s not to put him down. It is what it is. So, like I said, me wanting to move on, to express myself in different ways, it really ended up being the quintessential musical differences.”

Lawless also addressed whether he could reunite with Holmes onstage one last time. “Well, I would have to turn my back on the band that I have. And to do that… I’ve been with these guys for over 30 years, and this is the band that I know. And I just couldn’t do that.”

Lawless’s comments come as Holmes faces another serious health challenge, adding a difficult personal dimension to the history between the two musicians.

Holmes was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2026 and has begun radiotherapy in France, where he has lived with his wife since 2014.

This is Holmes’s second cancer battle in recent years. He underwent treatment for throat and neck cancer in 2022 and later said the disease was gone after seven weeks of radiation therapy.

Holmes joined W.A.S.P. in 1982 and remained with the band until 1990, contributing to some of its most important early albums and establishing himself as a defining part of its classic lineup.

He returned to W.A.S.P. in 1996 and stayed until 2001. He has not performed with the band since leaving for the second time, making a reunion with Lawless and the current lineup increasingly unlikely.
