Former Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley recently discussed why he did not join his former bandmates onstage during EddFest, attributing the missed opportunity to bassist Steve Harris’ strict rules regarding unrehearsed performances in an interview with Louder Sound.

During the interview, Bayley was first asked how he enjoyed appearing at EddFest. He shared his thoughts on the surprisingly large crowd and the positive reception he received from the fans.

“It was so much more than I had expected,” Bayley said. “Because the Friday part was announced late I thought I might play to, maybe, three thousand people, but apparently there were nine thousand. I had wondered how many people would be bothered, but the reaction was absolutely incredible.”

He also reflected on how the fan attitude toward him has evolved over the years.

“When I joined Maiden some people were sore about Bruce leaving, but the whole Blaze-hating thing was twenty years ago, and I realised that all of that [negativity] is totally gone,” Bayley continued. “I felt included.”

When asked if there was a possibility of the band inviting him on stage for such a historical moment, Bayley explained that Harris’ preference for rehearsed sets likely prevented it.

“I thought they might, but one thing I know about Steve is that he doesn’t like things that are unrehearsed,” Bayley explained. “He doesn’t do ‘off the cuff’. That would probably have been the main reason.”

This interview highlights Bayley’s current positive relationship with the band’s legacy and fans.

Bayley’s comments arrive in the wake of an event that was itself a milestone for the band and its former members. The scale of EddFest, and the role Bayley played in it, helps explain why fans wondered whether a reunion moment onstage might have been possible.

EddFest took place last Friday and Saturday, the 10th and 11th of July, at Knebworth House in England, bringing together 50,000 fans to celebrate Iron Maiden’s 50th anniversary with concerts, exhibitions and themed attractions inspired by different phases of the band’s career.

The Maidenville Stage on the Friday was compered by Planet Rock’s Paul Anthony and headlined by former Iron Maiden vocalist and Planet Rock presenter Blaze Bayley, who played a set of Maiden classics.

That Friday performance was all about Bayley and his band, running from a truncated opening cover of UFO’s “Doctor Doctor” to a grandstanding “Sign Of The Cross” against the setting sun, with Maiden’s 1994-99 vocalist delivering a set heavy on fan service.

Bayley’s place in the band’s history is precisely what made his EddFest appearance so notable. He fronted Iron Maiden from 1994 to 1999, recording the albums “The X Factor” and “Virtual XI” after Bruce Dickinson left the band.

He has acknowledged that those records divided the fanbase, and he offered his own explanation for it. Bayley said the sound of “The X Factor” was too dark for some Iron Maiden fans.

“‘The X Factor”s got some incredible music on it, but the sound of it is so dark, and the way it was produced, it’s not accessible like some of the other Maiden albums,” Bayley said. “People who did live with it, managed to find it.”

His remarks about Harris also fit a well-established picture of how the band operates live. Steve Harris was present to watch Bayley perform at EddFest, an appearance that underlined the respect between the two men even without an onstage collaboration. Taken together with Bayley’s own account, the story points to a bassist who favours tightly planned performances over spontaneous ones — which, in Bayley’s view, is the most likely reason the reunion moment never happened.
