French progressive metal band Gojira has announced a last-minute drummer change for their upcoming U.S. festival performances in July. Mario Duplantier, the band’s longtime drummer, will be unable to travel to the United States due to an unspecified immigration issue. Luigi Paraventi of Swiss metal band Paleface Swiss will step in as a temporary replacement for the affected shows.

The band shared the news via Instagram, expressing their support for Duplantier during this challenging time. “Mario is dealing with an immigration issue that has made it impossible for him to travel to the US in time for our shows,” the band wrote. “Mario is heartbroken not to be here with us and has fought hard every step of the way to find a solution.” The band added a playful reference to the Super Mario video game franchise: “We’re so grateful for the incredible Luigi Paraventi of Paleface Swiss, who has stepped in on short notice. Player 2 has entered the game — RESPECT. We can’t wait to see you all out there!!”

The affected performances are limited to three major U.S. festival dates scheduled for mid-July. These include Rock Fest in Cadott, Wisconsin on July 16, Upheaval in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 17, and Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival in Mansfield, Ohio on July 18. The last-minute nature of the change underscores the urgency of Duplantier’s situation and the significance of these festival commitments for the band.

Duplantier has been the consistent backbone of Gojira’s rhythm section for years. His inability to secure travel clearance in time for these performances demonstrates the unpredictable challenges that international musicians face when navigating complex visa and immigration regulations. The drummer’s determination to find a solution, despite ultimately being unable to make the journey, reflects the gravity of the circumstances he is facing.

Luigi Paraventi’s acceptance of the temporary replacement role showcases the collaborative spirit within the metal community. Paleface Swiss shares musical common ground with Gojira, making Paraventi a suitable choice to fill the void on short notice. His willingness to step in demonstrates the kind of professional solidarity that allows major festival events to proceed despite unexpected personnel changes. The band’s confidence in Paraventi suggests they believe the shows will maintain their quality and energy despite the circumstances.

At this time, there is no indication that Duplantier’s immigration issues will extend beyond these three July festival dates. No permanent replacement has been announced. The situation appears to be a temporary arrangement specific to these particular performances, with the possibility that normal operations may resume for future tour dates once the immigration matter is resolved.
