Stryper frontman Michael Sweet shared a message on social media to praise and support current Journey singer Arnel Pineda, soon after Journey featured Steve Perry lookalike singer Hugo Valenti as a guest performer at a Japan show. Valenti’s appearance sparked rumors that he could replace Pineda, who had previously expressed uncertainty about touring with Journey on the ongoing Final Frontier Tour.

Michael Sweet wrote: “I’m a huge Journey fan. Always have been. Steve Perry is in my top 5 vocalists of all time. Arnel Pineda is in my top 10 of all time.”

“I just wanted to express how amazing Arnel has been with Journey. Not only as a vocalist, but also (and equally as important), as a front man. Arnel is on fire. What an outstanding job he has done and he’s brought so much to the Journey name/brand. Much Love & Respect, Arnel.”

Pineda responded to Sweet’s post, writing: “so kind of you my dear friend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sending you and all the believers peace and love.”

Sweet’s message arrived as fans continued to discuss Valenti’s unexpected appearances with Journey and Pineda’s future with the band. However, the guest performances have not been confirmed as evidence of an imminent change in Journey’s lineup.

Valenti joined Journey during shows in Fukuoka and Tokyo in late August and early September 2026. At the Tokyo concert, he performed “Faithfully” and “Keep on Runnin’,” while Pineda remained onstage for most of the performance.

The appearances fueled speculation because Valenti is known for his resemblance to former Journey singer Steve Perry. Fans began wondering whether Journey was testing him as a possible replacement for Pineda, although no official announcement has stated that Valenti is joining the band.

Pineda has been Journey’s lead singer since 2007, when the band discovered him through YouTube videos. He had been an unknown singer before joining the group and has since fronted Journey for nearly two decades across its touring and recording career.

Pineda’s status has also been discussed in connection with the Final Frontier farewell tour. Guitarist Neal Schon previously described the situation as “very confusing” and acknowledged that the band had contractual obligations. Schon’s remarks came after Pineda expressed doubts about continuing on the tour.

For now, Valenti’s guest spots remain a source of fan speculation rather than a confirmed lineup change. Sweet’s public support adds another voice defending Pineda as Journey continues its farewell-tour run.
