Tension within Nightwish had built long before the final break. The band experienced its first internal conflict in September 2001 with bassist Sami Vänskä’s departure. Turunen privately informed the band of her intention to leave in December 2004.

She agreed to complete one more album and tour. According to archived records, she made an agreement with the band to keep this decision private. She would release her solo work only after Nightwish’s next studio album.

The Dramatic Dismissal

The situation reached its breaking point on October 21, 2005, after the final concert of the Once Upon a Tour. The band delivered an open letter dismissing their lead vocalist, shocking both fans and Turunen herself.

The letter, as documented on Nightwish’s official website, accused Turunen of prioritizing “business, money, and things that have nothing to do with emotions.” Turunen expressed particular upset about the public nature of this dismissal. She felt disappointed that nine years of collaboration ended through an open letter.

Turunen’s career took an impressive turn toward versatility after her departure. According to Byblos Festival, her album ‘Henkäys Ikuisuudesta’ achieved double Platinum status in Finland. This achievement demonstrated her ability to succeed independently of Nightwish. Her success marked just the beginning of her diverse musical journey.

Classical Crossover Evolution

Turunen expanded her artistic range further in 2015 with the release of ‘Ave Maria – En Plein Air.’ This classical album showcased her operatic training. As reported by United Rock Nations, this release established her credibility in both classical and rock circles. It proved her versatility as a vocalist.

Collaborative Projects And Legacy

Turunen has engaged in numerous high-profile collaborations throughout her solo career. She has worked with renowned artists including Within Temptation, Scorpions, and Mike Oldfield. These partnerships have enhanced her reputation. They have also contributed to the evolution of symphonic metal as a genre. Her work has cemented her position as one of the most influential voices in both metal and classical crossover music.

The dramatic split reshaped both Nightwish’s future and Turunen’s career path. This led to significant developments in both parties’ musical journeys in the years that followed.
