Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello recently explained how some of his fans deny his Black heritage due to cognitive dissonance, sharing his thoughts during an appearance on the Broken Record Podcast. Morello discussed how being half-Black affected his upbringing and how different groups perceive his race today.

He addressed the disbelief some listeners express when he talks about his African American background.

“There’s a sizable portion of people in my audience through the decades that are – when I talk about being African American – are stunned and refuse to believe it,” Morello said. “Like, there’s a cognitive dissonance, like, no, no, no, Tom Morello’s not Black.”

Morello then recalled growing up as the only Black person in his town and the challenges he faced during his childhood.

“I literally integrated the town, according to the real estate agent,” he continued. “One Black person lives in the town, it’s me. Got a white mom and there’s one kid, and every single day, I was reminded that I was Black. My hair was different, people wanna touch your hair, they wanna see your palms are a different color. There’s a lot of anthropological study of this guy. There’s a noose in my family’s garage at one point. I was Black, and there was no doubt to anyone in town I was Black.”

He also reflected on how his career in rock music, a genre where Black artists are often underrepresented on mainstream radio and in magazines, altered how people view his racial identity.

“Years later, I’m in a band whose music appears on radio stations that don’t traditionally play Black artists, or rock and roll magazines that never feature Black artists,” Morello added. “I think it’s just fascinating. It’s an interesting commentary on race in the United States of how, like, I’m the same shade I was when I was at Libertyville, and yet completely different groups view me in completely different ways.”

This discussion highlights the ongoing complexities of racial perception in the music industry and society. Morello’s family background and childhood experiences also help explain why he has consistently spoken about race as a central part of his identity.

Morello is the son of Ngethe Njoroge, a Kenyan diplomat of Kikuyu heritage, and Mary Morello, an American woman of Italian and Irish descent. His mixed heritage has shaped his understanding of how race can be interpreted differently by different audiences.

Njoroge was also associated with Kenya’s struggle for independence. Morello said his father was involved in the Mau Mau Uprising, the movement that fought against British colonial rule in Kenya. Njoroge later became a diplomat.

Morello was born in Harlem, New York, in 1964, but spent much of his childhood in Libertyville, Illinois. He encountered both subtle and overt racism while growing up in the largely white community.

His mother also became known for her activism. Mary Morello founded Parents for Rock and Rap, an organization that opposed censorship efforts targeting music. Her activism provided another important influence on Morello, whose work with Rage Against the Machine has frequently addressed injustice and political power.
