Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher has detailed the band’s criteria for replacing Brent Hinds in a recent interview with Guitar World. The band seeks someone with technical proficiency who can handle the demanding lifestyle of touring. They also emphasize the importance of finding someone who meshes well with the group’s dynamic.
“Someone who is easy to get along with, and who really has a desire to play — and can play well. Obviously, you gotta be somebody who we all get along with and can stand the true test of time,” Kelliher stated.
“Like, living together in a little tour bus on the road for fucking days and months at a time, it’s got to be someone who can do all that. And that’s another variable. Like, ‘Oh, this person is a great guitar player. Why don’t you hire them?’ It’s like, ‘Well, they gotta stand the test of time,'” he continued.
“We’ve got to be able to sit down and have a beer with them, go out to dinner with them, you know, feel them out, and make sure they’re Mastodon material. Like, can they hang, for sure, but it’s got to be someone who has a unique style, and is very serious about it,” Kelliher concluded.
The search for a new guitarist coincides with the band’s preparation for upcoming performances. They continue to work on new material during this transition period.
Recent Developments

Guitar World reports that the band has taken steps to maintain their touring schedule. YouTube guitarist Ben Eller has stepped in for recent performances. Eller’s position remains temporary, but his involvement shows the band’s dedication to finding the right match.
This interim arrangement enables Mastodon to fulfill their touring commitments. The band continues their search for a permanent member during this period.
Upcoming Tour Plans

Mastodon’s immediate schedule includes significant touring plans. A major tour with Coheed and Cambria is set for May. This upcoming tour will serve as a crucial test for any potential new member.
The extensive tour schedule reinforces Kelliher’s emphasis on finding someone capable of handling extended road life.
Future Prospects

The band maintains dual focus during this transition. They work on completing new material while searching for their new guitarist. This timing makes the selection process particularly important.
Mastodon’s methodical approach to this decision reflects their commitment to preserving their musical integrity. The band prioritizes group chemistry as they move forward.
