Sammy Hagar recently weighed in on Billie Eilish’s admission that she didn’t know who Van Halen were, offering his perspective in an interview with NME.

Back in 2019, the then-17-year-old pop star went viral after revealing her unfamiliarity with the iconic rock band. Hagar reacted to the moment with unexpected appreciation for her candor. “Whatsherface… Billie Eilish? That was very cool and honest of her,” Hagar said. “I thought it was funny, but I respected her because she’s not a bullshit artist.”

Hagar’s comments underscored his respect for Eilish’s straightforwardness. Rather than viewing her admission as a slight against the band or its legacy, he saw it as a refreshing example of authenticity in a music world where many feel pressure to pretend they know everything.

The moment that prompted Hagar’s reflection took place during a widely viewed television interview. As reported by Kerrang, Billie Eilish revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live that she didn’t know Van Halen, a revelation that the host’s questions made even more noticeable. The exchange quickly went viral, prompting widespread discussion across social media and entertainment outlets about generational differences in music familiarity.

The incident highlighted a clear divide between older and younger listeners. As Spin noted, many observers pointed out that it wasn’t surprising for a teenage artist in the late 2010s to be unfamiliar with a rock band whose peak era was the 1970s and ’80s. Fans and industry members alike acknowledged that such gaps in musical knowledge are natural given differing eras, influences, and cultural contexts.

Support for Eilish even came from within the Van Halen family. According to Loudwire, Wolfgang Van Halen defended her publicly, helping to redirect the narrative away from mockery toward a more understanding perspective.

As The Independent later discussed, the conversation broadened into a reflection on how artists from different generations inevitably have different reference points. These differences are neither unusual nor reflective of a musician’s credibility. Hagar’s respectful response to Eilish’s honesty aligned with this more nuanced view of the viral moment.
