Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has clarified the real circumstances surrounding his departure from the band in 2001. He revealed that it was driven by a life-threatening addiction rather than his side project Echobrain. In a candid interview, Newsted explained that he struggled with substance abuse and desperately needed time away to seek help.

“The reason I left Metallica is because I was a horrible addict,” Newsted stated. “I was way up against myself and if I didn’t get some kind of help, I was gonna die. And so I just said, ‘You guys, can I have a minute? Please give me a minute.’ And they said, ‘No.'”

Newsted emphasized his commitment to the band. He said: “I would rather live than be in your band. I love being in your band. I think it’s kind of obvious. I wear your shirt every f*cking night. I wear our shirt every night. I fly my colors every night. I meet every f*cking person that wants to meet and represent us for all the fans every f*cking night. Don’t tell me I’m not committed. Don’t tell me I’m not loyal.”

He further stressed his dedication. “I’m always the first one in and last one out,” he noted. “I’m not saying the words. It’s f*cking history. It’s real. You can’t give me that minute to get my head straight again? Then I have to go. Not that I don’t love you, and certainly not that I’m not committed to this band. But it wasn’t because of Echobrain.”

Newsted’s departure marked a pivotal moment in Metallica’s history. The full context of his exit reveals deeper issues within the band during that turbulent period.

Newsted’s battle with addiction was more severe than initially understood by the public. The PRP reported that Newsted struggled with painkiller addiction, which he developed while managing neck problems during his time with the band. After a shoulder injury, his painkiller use escalated into a serious problem that threatened his health and life.

The bassist’s candid admission about his addiction underscores the severity of his situation at the time. Rather than being a choice driven by creative ambitions with Echobrain, Newsted’s departure was fundamentally about survival and recovery. His willingness to speak openly about his struggles has since helped shed light on the mental health and addiction challenges that musicians in high-pressure environments often face.

The situation became more complex when examining the band’s response to Newsted’s plea for help. Blabbermouth revealed that the band’s onetime therapist Phil Towle stated Newsted didn’t necessarily want to leave Metallica itself. He wanted to escape the unhealthy reality that existed within the band, including years of unprocessed grief and internal tensions.

iHeart reported that the band’s refusal to grant Newsted time off to address his addiction issues was a critical turning point. This rejection forced him to make an impossible choice: remain in the band while battling a life-threatening addiction, or leave to save his life. The decision ultimately had far-reaching consequences for the entire band.

Since his departure, Newsted has addressed his addiction issues and achieved recovery. Wikipedia documented that Newsted reported being sober from painkillers since approximately 2010. This indicates he successfully sought help and achieved lasting recovery after leaving the band.
