Late Van Halen icon Eddie Van Halen’s son and Mammoth frontman Wolfgang Van Halen revealed that he won a five-year bet against a Van Halen fan named Robert Taylor, who claimed Wolf would eventually be playing only Van Halen songs and would not succeed with his own band, Mammoth.
Five years ago, Robert Taylor told Wolfgang Van Halen, “In 5 years, he’ll be playing all VH.” Wolfgang responded at the time: “I’ll take that bet. August 24, 2026. You can have front row tickets.”
Wolfgang Van Halen later explained, “August 24th 2021: The first Mammoth record just came out, we had just started touring, when this kind fella (along with many MANY others) said this. I jokingly responded, threw it in my calendar and forgot about it. Today is that day.”
“5 years later. What a trip. And yeah, this guy is a dickhead, but I just wanted to say thanks for listening and sticking with me. I’m very proud of what we’ve built here and I intend to keep going until the wheels fall off.”
“I never planned on playing VH in any capacity when it came to Mammoth, and 5 years later I feel exactly the same. As my dad once said, ‘I’d rather bomb on my own than succeed with someone else’s music.’ Don’t ever let anyone tell you what you’re capable of. That’s for you to decide.”
“PS: If anyone knows Robert and where he’s from, let him know that a ticket is waiting for him at a show of his choice.”
The exchange lands in the middle of a career that Wolfgang has built on his own terms. Mammoth WVH was Wolfgang’s debut as a solo frontman project and arrived as a strong first impression in 2021.
The self-titled debut released on June 11, 2021, reached No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums, Hard Rock Albums, and Independent Albums charts, while also landing at No. 12 on the Billboard 200.
Wolfgang launched Mammoth with a distinctive setup: he wrote and performed every part on the debut album himself, a move that drew attention because of the scale of the undertaking. Wolfgang has said his father gave him his first music lessons at age nine and that he did not want to be “another version” of Eddie, even while carrying that influence with him.
Eddie Van Halen’s legacy remains central to Wolfgang’s story, both as a family influence and as a musical benchmark. Wolfgang and Eddie shared a close musical bond, and the older Van Halen clearly shaped his son’s understanding of tone, performance, and professionalism.
Mammoth has continued to build momentum in 2025 and 2026. The band announced summer 2026 tour dates in support of The End, which was released in 2025 and became Mammoth’s third album.
The End was recorded entirely by Wolfgang Van Halen, who handled vocals, guitar, bass, drums and piano, and two songs from the album reached No. 1 at rock radio.
The new material has also expanded Mammoth’s catalog beyond its debut-era success. The group now has four No. 1 rock radio singles, including “Distance,” “Don’t Back Down,” “The End” and “The Spell.”
