Dee Snider has explained the personal sacrifice behind “Don’t Let Me Down,” a track from Twisted Sister’s 1984 album Stay Hungry. The musician discussed the song’s origins in a conversation on X.

A fan told Snider, “After ‘You Can’t Stop Rock n Roll,’ ‘The Price’ is my favorite TS song. Believe it or not, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ is third.” Snider responded, “I thought ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ was one of the strongest tracks on ‘Stay Hungry’ but it is the least recognized.”

The fan then asked who Snider was singing to on the track, suggesting it could be about the band, the music industry, or perhaps his relationship with his wife Suzette.

Question: “Agreed! And who are you singing that to? Sometimes I think the band, sometimes the industry, sometimes maybe a twist on you and Suzette… so many interpretations. Am I close at all?”

“I was away from my wife and newborn son for four months in the UK recording and touring,” Snider said. “Couldn’t even afford to call them. Wrote a letter every single day, Watched my son grow through photos Suzette sent. I was living my dream… and suffering for it.”

Snider shared these details about the song during the period when Twisted Sister was recording and touring in the United Kingdom. The remarks shed light on the personal cost of the band’s early success.

The comment reveals what lay beneath the track on Stay Hungry. Snider was separated from his young family during a critical period of the band’s career, unable to maintain regular contact due to financial constraints. His only connection to his son during those months came through photographs sent by his wife.

This sacrifice was part of the price Snider paid for Twisted Sister’s rise in the music industry. The stay away from home, combined with the demands of recording and performing, created the emotional backdrop for “Don’t Let Me Down.”

The song stands as a document of that struggle. What the fan had identified as one of the band’s strongest tracks was rooted in Snider’s experience of chasing his dream while missing irreplaceable moments with his family. The personal struggle behind the music gave the song its depth and resonance.
