Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine temporarily halted the band’s live performance in Helsinki, Finland to blast a mainstream newspaper reporter for asking an inappropriate, instigating question backstage. The reporter asked who would win a physical fight between Mustaine and Metallica’s James Hetfield.
During the rant, Mustaine recounted the backstage encounter with visible frustration. “So before we took the stage tonight, we were doing some press backstage. And I was doing an interview with some guy from a newspaper here – big newspaper, you can probably figure out who it was. And the guy was such a f*cking d*ckhead,” Mustaine said to the crowd. “He asked me, if I fought James Hetfield, who would win? And I thought, ‘What kind of a f*cking idiot would say something like that?'”
The legendary guitarist then expressed his desire to dedicate a song to the offending journalist. He found himself without the perfect track for the moment. “I want to dedicate this next song to [the reporter] but we don’t have a song called ‘I’m an A–hole.’ Instead, we’ll do another new song called ‘Let There Be Shred,'” Mustaine announced before launching into the performance.
The incident occurred during Megadeth’s appearance at the Tuska Festival in Helsinki on June 26, 2026. This marked a significant moment in what has become the band’s farewell tour. The performance took place during heavy rain, yet the band closed the first night of the festival with characteristic intensity and energy.
Mustaine announced in August 2024 that Megadeth would conclude with one final album before embarking on an extensive farewell world tour. The Helsinki show demonstrated the band’s commitment to delivering powerful performances during this final chapter.
Mustaine’s frustration with the journalist’s question reflects the professional relationship between the two metal icons. There is no actual feud between Mustaine and James Hetfield of Metallica. Both remain legendary figures in heavy metal who have maintained a cordial relationship throughout their careers. The reporter’s question was clearly designed to provoke conflict where none exists, which explains Mustaine’s sharp reaction.
The Helsinki performance showcased Megadeth’s current lineup, which includes Finnish-born guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari. Mäntysaari officially joined the group in September 2023 following the departure of Kiko Loureiro. He has become an integral part of the band’s sound during this final chapter, bringing a deep understanding of Megadeth’s metal foundation to the group’s legacy material and new compositions.
Mustaine has expressed ambitious plans for the band’s final show. The frontman desires for Megadeth’s last performance to take place in space, specifically on the moon, calling it “a really fitting climax” for a band that has defined thrash metal for over four decades. Whether this vision becomes reality or the band concludes their journey in more conventional venues, the Helsinki incident demonstrates that Mustaine remains as passionate and unfiltered as ever when defending the integrity of his art and his peers.
