Former Metallica bassist Ron McGovney asked fans for help after Hurricane Helene hit. He set up a GoFundMe for his daughter Jordann and her husband, who lost everything in the flooding in Asheville, NC. He posted, “This is Ron McGovney, some of you may know me as Metallica’s first bass player. Please help my daughter Jordann and her husband AJ. They lost everything in the Asheville, NC flooding. Thank you.”

McGovney explained in another post, “My daughter lost everything when her apartment flooded in Asheville. She had no way of communicating that she was okay. I could only receive texts. Her cellphone didn’t work at all. Somehow, she got a hold of a Starlink phone and called my wife who was in a different state.”

Hurricane Helene struck Florida’s Big Bend region on September 26, 2024, as a strong Category 4 storm, causing significant damage and flooding. Wind speeds reached 140 mph, making it the strongest hurricane to hit that area. It caused severe flooding in the southern Appalachians, and caused hundreds of deaths and billions in property damage.

To help with the recovery, Metallica and Dolly Parton donated significant amounts. Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation gave $50,000 each to World Central Kitchen and Team Rubicon, while Parton made a personal donation of $1 million.
