Former Scorpions drummer Herman Rarebell shared his thoughts about the band’s musical direction in an interview with Talking The Talk With Don. The veteran musician played with the band for two decades until 1996. He expressed strong criticism about their post-1996 releases.

“For me, the band has been over since 1996. There was nothing which they released after I left which knocked me out, where I said, ‘Wow, this is amazing,'” Rarebell stated. “Even the last album, Rudolf told me, ‘It’s gonna be like the ‘Blackout’ album.’ I said, ‘It has nothing to do with ‘Blackout’.'”

“The last drummer they had was James Kottak. He passed away. I’m very sad about this because he was a good guy,” he continued. “And then I wrote an e-mail to them. I said, ‘Why don’t we do something together again?’ And you know what? I didn’t even get an answer. After 20 years being with those fuckers, not even an answer.”

“Because I can do my own thing — no problem. They can’t,” Rarebell added. “Because the chemistry we had was unique. And if you fuck that up, it’s gonna be hard to replace. And the people out there, the fans, they’re not stupid. They can hear it immediately.”

Rarebell’s comments highlight a significant transition period for the legendary German rock band. His statements mark a clear divide between their classic era and modern incarnation.

Classic Lineup Era

Records from historical sources revealed the band’s most successful lineup included Rarebell from 1978 to 1992. This formation produced iconic albums like ‘Lovedrive,’ ‘Animal Magnetism,’ and ‘Love at First Sting.’

Rarebell’s impact extended beyond his role as drummer. He contributed to songwriting and helped shape the band’s signature sound.

The Scorpions underwent various lineup changes after Rarebell’s departure. Band records documented these transitions as a new chapter in their evolution.

The band continued releasing studio albums. Their musical direction shifted from the classic sound of the 1980s, supporting Rarebell’s observations.

The Scorpions released their latest album ‘Rock Believer’ in February 2022. Louder Sound covered this milestone in the band’s ongoing journey.

James Kottak’s passing marked another significant change for the band. Mikkey Dee now occupies the drummer position in their current lineup.
