Ted Nugent made waves in the industry not just because of his music, but also due to some controversies related to his personal life. Allegations of affairs with underage girls circulated online for years since two women claimed they had sex with him as minors. These claims added to the pedophilia accusations directed at Nugent, who had a history of dating a teenager as an adult.
Did He Adopt A Minor To Date Her?

Said girl was Pele Massa, who was 17 when she and Nugent became involved in 1978. The relationship raised legal questions at the time. In Hawaii, where they lived, the age of consent was 16, and the couple could have legally married. But, due to the age difference, the singer chose to adopt Massa as her legal guardian instead.
He later defended the decision by saying Massa’s parents approved of him as he was a better option than ‘drug-infested punks’ in high school. Massa herself described their relationship as deeply personal, even if it was seen as inappropriate at the time, reflecting on how it might be viewed as criminal today. Despite this, Nugent faced significant public backlash due to the age gap and the nature of their connection.
Nugent’s Response To The Claims

Repeatedly facing criticism over his ex-relationship, Nugent addressed the topic on multiple platforms, attacking the media for what he considered false portrayals of his life during a Facebook live in 2022. He denied ever adopting anyone, let alone his underage girlfriend, and dismissed the accusations as lies.
The Odds Weren’t In The Singer’s Favor

Despite Nugent’s explanations, the controversy never entirely subsided. In fact, it even grew bigger after other women came forward, accusing him of pedophilia. One of those women was Courtney Love, who claimed she had oral sex with the singer at the age 12. Nugent called Love a ‘horrible human being’ in response and denied having any involvement with her.
That didn’t convince everyone, though. Some people also took Nugent’s ‘Jailbait’ song as proof of the allegations because it mentioned having affair with a 13-year-old. The singer later explained that writing a song about something doesn’t mean he condoned or participated in it, giving AC/DC and Eric Clapton as examples.
Despite his attempts to downplay the meaning, the track continued to be a point of discussion, especially when combined with the accusations about Nugent’s personal life.
