Matt Honeycutt made his debut as a founding member of Kublai Khan in Texas in 2009. Though the rocker released several albums and EPs with his band and performed countless shows, there’s little information about him out there. Let’s see whatever we know about him!

Honeycutt formed Kublai Khan with guitarist Nolan Ashley, bassist Eric English, and drummer Isaac Lamb. Wikipedia stated that the group built their reputation through relentless touring since their formation but also gained some recognition with their music.

The band’s first EP, ‘Youth War,’ came out in 2010 as a self-release. In 2014, they signed with Artery Recordings, releasing their debut album, ‘Balancing Survival and Happiness.’ Later records, ‘New Strength,’ ‘Nomad,’ and ‘Absolute,’ further established their presence in the metalcore scene, according to Last.fm.

The Band’s Sound And Inspirations

The group’s sound took its inspiration from the early 1990s hardcore scene, with bands like Integrity and Hatebreed influencing their style, Wikipedia wrote on their page. They combined heavy breakdowns with downtuned guitars and aggressive vocals. Honeycutt once told Heavy Magazine that Kublai Khan’s sound evolved from their desire to pull elements from music they enjoyed while creating something unique.

Another interview with Metal Injection revealed the frontman’s lyrical inspirations often came from personal experiences and societal issues, especially in tracks like ‘Swan Song,’ which addresses violence against women. That aspect carries the influence of early 2000s metalcore and bands like Remembering Never and Bury Your Dead (per HM Mag).

Honeycutt, who grew up in Sherman, Texas, took an interest in music during his high school years, according to Metal Injection. He also pursued other ventures like tattoo art in later years, sharing his work often on Instagram and crediting himself as a tattooer for Electric Age Tattoo Company in his bio.

The rocker doesn’t use his social media to only share his artwork and music, though. He occasionally posts important updates about his personal life as well, like he did in July 2023 ahead of Kublai Khan’s Inkcarceration Fest show in Ohio. In the statement, whose screenshot was re-shared by a Reddit user, he cited his uncle’s cancer treatment as the reason.

The health problem didn’t stop Kublai Khan forever, of course. The band returned this year with the release of their fifth album, ‘Exhibition of Prowess.’

Next year, they’ll hit the road in the UK and Europe, they announced last month on Instagram. The 2025 tour will kick off on January 17 in Tilburg, Netherlands, and conclude in Southampton, UK, on February 3.
