James Owen Sullivan, aka The Rev, was a driving force behind Avenged Sevenfold. As one of the band’s founding members, he played a crucial role in shaping their sound and throwing them to success. His contributions as a drummer, vocalist, and songwriter helped define their identity and cement their place in the metal scene. However, his final work with the band before his untimely passing sparked the most discussions and theories among fans and bandmates alike.

On December 28, 2009, The Rev was found unresponsive in his Huntington Beach home and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. While initial reports pointed to natural causes, a toxicology report later confirmed he had died from an overdose of oxycodone, oxymorphone, diazepam, nordiazepam, and alcohol. His autopsy also revealed an enlarged heart, which may have been a contributing factor.

In the months leading up to his death, The Rev had reportedly been dealing with health issues, including stomach problems. He also struggled with substance use, something that had been a part of his life for years. His bandmates later recalled how dedicated he was to his craft, pouring everything he had into the music and “exhausting every ounce of what he had left.”

The last song The Rev wrote for Avenged Sevenfold was ‘Fiction,’ originally titled ‘Death.’ After his passing, the song took on an interesting significance, with lyrics that seemed to foreshadow his fate: “Gave you all I had to give/Found a place for me to rest my head/While I may be hard to find/Heard there’s peace just on the other side.”

His bandmates were deeply affected by the song, with M. Shadows noting how unusual it was for someone to essentially say goodbye in a song and then pass away shortly after. Coupled with how he had been pushing himself to his limits in the studio, that led some to speculate that the drummer had a sense of what was coming.

The theory remained just that—a theory though discussions about it authencity continued. Some believed there truth to it while others thought reading too much into this was disrespectful to The Rev’s memory.

The song came out as part of Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘Nightmare’ album. To pay tribute, Avenged Sevenfold kept The Rev’s original vocal tracks on ‘Fiction,’ creating a haunting posthumous duet between him and M. Shadows.

The Drummer’s Legacy In Music

As a drummer, The Rev was known for his technical precision and unique style, drawing inspiration from legends like Vinnie Paul, Mike Portnoy, and Dave Lombardo. His ‘double-ride’ technique became a defining characteristic of Avenged Sevenfold’s sound. But his influence went beyond drumming—his songwriting contributions, including ‘A Little Piece of Heaven’ and ‘Afterlife,’ played a key role in shaping the band’s evolution.

Beyond Avenged Sevenfold, The Rev explored other musical ventures. His avant-garde metal side project, Pinkly Smooth, showcased his experimental tendencies, blending theatrical and metal elements in unconventional ways. Their album ‘Unfortunate Snort’ remains a cult favorite among fans.
