Dream Theater bassist John Myung revealed the reasoning behind Mike Portnoy’s return to the band in a recent interview with A&P-Reacts. The band decided to bring back their original drummer to recapture their most successful era.
“We were like ‘Well, let’s go back and write an album like we used to.’ In order to do that we need Mike [Portnoy] back,” Myung explained. “And Mike was ready to come back.”
“He had a conversation with the few of us and we had a meeting. And it made sense,” he continued. “As a band we want to go back to where we were where we felt that we were the strongest. And that’s when we were at our best. So, have him comeback and to revisit that chemistry and to write the album that we did it. All came together really nicely.”
This reunion represents a significant milestone in Dream Theater’s history. It brings together the elements that defined their classic sound.

New Album Milestone

Loudwire documents the reunion’s first major achievement with the release of ‘Parasomnia’ on February 7, 2025. This album marks Portnoy’s first recording with Dream Theater in 15 years.
