The metalcore scene witnessed one of its most controversial moments in 2011 when Design The Skyline emerged into the spotlight. According to Herozine, the band’s signing with Victory Records led to their sudden rise to fame but ultimately defined their legacy in unexpected ways.

Origins And Early Formation

According to historical records, the band formed in 2007 in Corpus Christi, Texas. They initially performed under the name Extra Large Kids. The group of high school friends rebranded as Design The Skyline in 2010. This change marked the beginning of their controversial journey in the metalcore scene.

Their presence in the local music scene grew steadily. They eventually caught Victory Records’ attention. However, this transition from local act to signed artist would prove more challenging than anticipated as their authenticity became a point of discussion.

The Victory Records Era And Initial Backlash

The band introduced themselves to the wider metal community through their song ‘Surrounded by Silence’ and its accompanying music video. What should have been a triumphant moment instead became a catalyst for widespread criticism. As reported by MetalSucks, two key elements drove the negative reaction.

The band’s visual presentation, deeply rooted in the ‘scene’ subculture, became a significant point of contention. Their experimental approach to songwriting featured dramatic shifts in musical structure. These elements created a perfect storm of controversy within the metalcore community.

Post-Controversy Evolution

The band faced significant internal challenges after the initial wave of criticism. When they released their debut album ‘Nevaeh’ through Victory Records, the reception remained mixed. But their sound evolved as they tried to distance themselves from their controversial beginnings.

The band continued through various lineup changes and musical transitions until 2019. They attempted to release singles for a planned second album titled ‘Rebirth,’ but the album never materialized. Eventually, band members left one by one, and Design the Skyline was no more.

The group is still highly criticized after all these years, though there are also some fans warming up to them and their potential comeback.
