Jørn ‘Necrobutcher’ Stubberud is a founding member of Mayhem and the last remaining original member of the Norwegian black metal band. Since co-founding the group in 1984 alongside Euronymous and Manheim, he has been a key figure in the development of black metal. Despite numerous controversies and Mayhem’s turbulent history, Necrobutcher has had financial success and lasting influence.
Necrobutcher’s Career
Necrobutcher’s career in Mayhem has been filled with both tragedy and success. According to his biography on Metal Wiki, after the suicide of vocalist Dead in 1991 and growing tensions with Euronymous, he temporarily left the band. The group fell into more chaos after Euronymous’s murder in 1993.
Necrobutcher returned to Mayhem in 1995 and helped rebuild the band by working alongside Hellhammer, Maniac, and Blasphemer. The band released several acclaimed albums under this lineup.
Necrobutcher had other interests beyond music. In 2018, he published ‘The Death Archives: Mayhem 1984–94,‘ a book detailing the band’s early years. The book provides a first-hand account of Mayhem’s controversial history.
Mayhem was officially inducted into the Rockheim Hall of Fame in 2021 and became the first black metal band to receive this recognition.

I was smart – I invested in real estate in the early ’90s. I only bought a simple house – more like a cabin. We weren’t bringing in Iron Maiden or Metallica money, so I couldn’t afford more. But I still live in it. Of course, I have upgraded it – now it’s worth millions in Norwegian money. Real estate is the only thing that grows in value.”
- Global Marketing Strategy: Mayhem focused on expanding into untapped markets, a move Necrobutcher compared to the Rolling Stones’ approach to touring. He said, “I realized that I have the same strategy as Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones. He understands it’s important to be the first Western band in any country. When you get there, you are the gods even if the people who come after you are better than you. I love to be the first metal band in any country.”
