Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci shared his thoughts about Mike Portnoy’s return in an interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine. The discussion focused on the band’s upcoming 40th anniversary tour and their reunion with original drummer Mike Portnoy.

“You know, it’s hard to say. You know, it’s not something that you really predict or plan or whatever. It was sort of like everything aligned. The stars aligned and it was the right time to do it,” Petrucci explained.

“We’re also at the point where, this is it hurts me to say in some ways. And it’s also fun to say 40th anniversary,” he continued. “But no, we’re actually really, really fortunate to have a career that that long. And so this is the 40th anniversary tour. So there’s so many milestones. You know, Mike returning the first record with him in many, many years and then celebrating the 40th anniversary. So it’s been incredible.”

The reunion with Portnoy represents a significant milestone for Dream Theater. This timing aligns with several major developments in the band’s journey.

Metal Injection revealed the band’s 40th anniversary celebration began on February 7, 2025, in Philadelphia.

The tour visited major cities including Nashville, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Boston. A special performance in New York City on March 22 concluded the tour.

Blabbermouth detailed the shows’ unique format as ‘An Evening With Dream Theater.’ The performances showcase classics and fan favorites from their entire catalog.

The band chose to perform without opening acts. This decision allows them to present a comprehensive journey through their four-decade legacy.

Dream Theater’s official website announced the band’s work on their first new album with Portnoy since 2009.

This new release marks a full-circle moment for the band. It reunites the core members who established Dream Theater’s signature progressive metal sound during their early years.
