Greta Van Fleet Confesses Breakup Rumors Were An ‘Intentional’ PR Move

Greta Van Fleet members Jake Kiszka and Danny Wagner recently addressed the rumors surrounding the band’s potential breakup, explaining that the cryptic social media posts that sparked the speculation were actually an intentional publicity move. The musicians discussed the situation during an appearance on Lipss Service.

The discussion arose when the host asked about the mystique of taking a break and the cryptic posts that led fans to believe the band had split up. In response to the question about whether people thought they broke up for a minute, Jake Kiszka explained how they reacted to the online rumors.

“Yeah. No, it was interesting because we thought, oh, apparently we’re broken up,” Kiszka said. “We learned that from the internet or something, you know.”

He then admitted that the band’s social media strategy was designed to generate that exact reaction.

“Well, it was kind of like, yeah, I obviously somewhat intentional, you know, the wording and some of the nuance of how we posted,” Kiszka continued. “It was like, yeah, wouldn’t it be interesting if everybody just thought we broke up for a moment?”

Danny Wagner added that the band needed a way to make a significant impact after being away from the spotlight for a while.

“Well, when you take a year and a half off, you need something to do, right?” Wagner said. “All right. So, we made an album which was, you know, great. It’s wonderful. But also, when you come back to life, you have to make a splash.”

The band has since returned from their hiatus with a new album and upcoming tour plans.

The confusion that Kiszka and Wagner described did not come out of nowhere. The band had been on a two-year hiatus from touring when fans noticed a cryptic social media video that “thanked” them, flickering through clips from across their career before closing with a message signed by all four members.

That post read, “Thanks for the wild ride, love, Josh, Jake, Sam and Daniel,” a sign-off that many listeners interpreted as a farewell. The band never confirmed a split, but the ambiguity of the wording was enough to send speculation across social media.

The timing of the band’s return has now become clearer. Greta Van Fleet will release their fourth studio album, “Palace for the People,” on October 9, 2026. The record was recorded in Tennessee in the spring of 2026 and was co-produced by the band alongside Mike Elizondo, whose credits include work with Turnstile, Eminem, and Fiona Apple.

The group has also been building momentum ahead of the release. Listening events are scheduled at various record stores, and the band has lined up intimate performances in Nashville at The Basement on October 3, 10, and 17. The activity marks a sharp turn from the silence that fueled the breakup theories in the first place.

This is not the first time the band has used downtime as a creative tool. Jake Kiszka previously spoke about how time away from the road shaped their 2021 album “The Battle at Garden’s Gate.”

“[The time off] lent us the ability for two more songs on the album,” Kiszka said at the time.

Greta Van Fleet formed in Frankenmuth, Michigan, in 2012, with brothers Josh, Jake, and Sam Kiszka joined by drummer Danny Wagner. The band built its catalog with “Anthem of the Peaceful Army,” “The Battle at Garden’s Gate,” and “Starcatcher,” and won the Grammy for Best Rock Album for “From the Fires,” adding further nominations in later years.

Against that history, the cryptic post and the resulting rumors now read less like a farewell and more like a deliberate setup for a comeback. With a new album days away and shows on the calendar, the band appears to have gotten exactly the reaction its members described.
