While on tour with former Deep Purple vocalist Glenn Hughes, Yngwie Malmsteen talked about his approach to stage performances in a recent chat with Eddie Trunk on Sirius XM. When the interviewer asked him whether he rehearsed before shows, the singer answered:

“Haha! No, I don’t rehearse. I don’t rehearse at all. The band does. I don’t. I just do a kind of a long soundcheck the first day. Ever. I just do what I do.”

Referring to his setlists, he added:

“I might throw in songs that weren’t on the setlist. I might not do songs that were on the setlist, so it’s never the same, and that keeps me on my toes, and it keeps the rest of the guys on their toes. It makes it exciting and dangerous and fun.”

Malmsteen also noted that, while his band knew most of his music and kept up with him, he added ‘different intros and solos’ to the stage gigs from time to time. Then, the singer explained how his views on unplanned performances affected his approach to music by saying:

“The reason why I’m still doing this after 40-plus years, and going out and playing, is because I don’t have a rehearsed set because if I had a rehearsed set, it would be like turning on a jukebox. It would be that boring. It’s boring for me. It’s boring for everybody. I need a little danger.”

According to his past interviews, Malmsteen went for different methods in the studio as well. In fact, for a drum trigger in his latest album ‘Parabellum,’ he used a gun during the recordings in 2021.
