Max Cavalera On The Anxiety Haunting Him Before Soulfly Shows

In a recent chat with Project Backstage Interviews, Soulfly vocalist Max Cavalera shared how he felt before performances after four decades in the industry. When asked what kept him going to make music after all these years, he said:

“Well, to me, it’s a journey. It’s a long journey. It started in Brazil, of course — I think now it’s 40 years I’m making music and touring for close to 30, I think, 27 years touring. And the best thing about it is that I don’t lose the passion. I still, I’m nervous before the show; I’m going to be nervous tonight — very nervous, like butterflies and everything. But I think that’s good. It’s a good anxiety. It’s a good nervous.”

The singer detailed the nature of his pre-show excitement by explaining:

“It’s a different kind of nervous than other type of nervous that you get. This is good. It’s excitement, nervous-type thing. It’s difficult to explain. But it lasts all the way till you hit the stage, and then you hear the roar, and you have your guitar, and you hear the first note, and it goes away the minute you hit the stage. It’s incredible. It’s just magic. I think there’s a lot of magic in me. I know it’s cheesy to say magic, but I don’t know another word to describe this because it’s a crazy feeling that we get on the stage, and I think the fans get it.”

Cavalera and his brother Igor are about to end a 40-date US tour, which began at the Diamond Ballroom in Oklahoma City in early September. The currently ongoing shows came in support of Sepultura’s ‘Bestial Devastation’ and ‘Morbid Visions.’

The two re-recorded the EP and the album under the Cavalera project this past Spring. They talked about records around their release date in July, with Max saying:

“As we get harder year after year, sometimes you’ve got to go back to where it all started! We re-recorded ‘Bestial Devastation’ and ‘Morbid Visions’ with the amazing sound of now but with its raw and timeless spirit. The artwork reflects the times we’re living in right now…. Apocalyptic as hell! We also have two new tracks with riffs from those days, remembered by heart.”

Following the conclusion of the US tour in Los Angeles in mid-October, the Cavalera brothers will hit the road for the European leg with a performance in the UK on November 9.
