Throughout their career, Iron Maiden swapped to different vocalists. Starting their career with Paul Di’Anno as the lead singer, the band made a decision to replace Di’Anno with Bruce Dickinson. Dickinson, too was eventually replaced by Blaze Bayley, who also contributed highly to the band’s legacy.

Although Di’Anno’s stay in the band was short, his contribution to the band was as great as Dickinson’s. When it comes to the age-old question of who is the better singer, there are a few factors to take into consideration.

Di’Anno’s Contributions to Iron Maiden

Di’Anno was the original vocalist for Iron Maiden, singing on their first two studio albums, ‘Iron Maiden’ in 1980 and ‘Killers’ in 1981. His departure marked the end of the Di’Anno era and the beginning of Dickinson’s tenure. Di’Anno’s contribution was significant in establishing Iron Maiden as a major influence in the early days of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Compared to Dickinson, he has a grittier and raw vocal style. His voice is more straightforward and punk-influenced, reflecting the band’s early sound and the NWOBHM.

Dickinson’s Contributions to Iron Maiden

On the other hand, Dickinson is known for his operatic vocal style, and his voice is often characterized by its wide range and soaring highs. His vocals are clean and melodic, and he has the ability to hit and sustain high notes with precision. Though he joined the band later, Dickinson was the lead vocalist during the band’s most commercially successful period, contributing to albums like ‘The Number of the Beast,’ ‘Piece of Mind,’ ‘Powerslave,’ and others. He also played a crucial role in the band’s evolution towards a more progressive and complex musical style.

Who Is Better: Dickinson or Di’Anno?

Of course, the question of whether Bruce Dickinson or Paul Di’Anno is ‘better’ is subjective and depends on individual preferences. However, some fans may prefer the energy and rawness of Paul Di’Anno’s vocals, especially on the early Iron Maiden albums, while others may appreciate Bruce Dickinson’s more melodic and theatrical style, which became synonymous with the band’s classic period.

While Dickinson is capable of singing the songs originally sung by the other singers, Di’Anno could make fans feel the song with a passion. Most people prefer Dickinson over Di’Anno due to Dickinson’s high range vocals that Di’anno did not have. For those more into raw sounds, Di’Anno will be the better choice for you, but for those preferring to listen to the more melodic side of Maiden, the answer is Dickinson.
