Hughes posted the announcement on his official account: “Glenn Hughes Announcement: Live Shows Cancelled. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Glenn Hughes announces his retirement from touring and live performances. Upon his Doctor’s advice, Glenn will have to undergo heart surgery and has made the difficult decision to step back from live performances for the foreseeable future.”

In a heartfelt message to his fans, Hughes explained his health situation: “This past year, I’ve had some health issues. The results from numerous MRIs, CT scans, and an echocardiogram have alerted my medical team that I need another open-heart surgery. I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority. Grateful to have been chosen with a life full with the gift of music… Thank you for walking beside me.”

The Dead Daisies, the rock supergroup where Hughes serves as frontman, will also be affected by this decision. The Canyon Agoura Hills venue announced the cancellation of The Dead Daisies’ October 2 performance. The venue stated: “Artist health must always be a priority. We truly wish Glenn Hughes the best of luck with his surgery and recovery as he takes on this new chapter in life.”

This retirement decision follows Hughes’ cancellation of his spring 2026 U.S. tour, which he had attributed to a minor health issue requiring his attention. The 74-year-old musician will turn 75 later this month. He has been a fixture in rock music for decades, having performed with Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and various other projects throughout his storied career. His decision to step away from live performance represents a significant moment in rock history.

Hughes has faced cardiovascular challenges before. He underwent heart surgery in 2013 to repair an enlarged aorta. The current need for another open-heart surgery underscores the serious nature of his medical condition. His choice to prioritize his wellbeing over his passion for performing reflects a mature recognition that even the most dedicated musicians must sometimes yield to physical health demands.

The retirement announcement has resonated throughout the rock community. Fans and fellow musicians have acknowledged Hughes’ contributions to the genre over his five decades in music. His work with The Dead Daisies kept him actively touring and recording until this recent health crisis forced his hand.
