Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee recently discussed the band’s decision to end their career on a high note rather than risk becoming another legacy act that overstays its welcome. Lee reflected on the band’s multiple departures and reunions, explaining the philosophy that guided their final decision to call it quits.

“I left in 2000, so it’s been a couple of times. And then in 2016, we decided, you know what? Let’s go out on a high note here and let it rip and not run this thing into the ground,” Lee stated. “And then all of a sudden we’re playing county fairs and not-so-rad gigs. Rather than burn it out, we’re like, let’s just cut it, and in 2016, we kind of officially did.”

The drummer emphasized the band’s commitment to preserving their legacy rather than allowing it to fade through endless touring and diminishing returns. “I don’t know, we just didn’t want to be one of those bands. We were like, we don’t deserve to fade out here. Like we deserve to take this thing out at the top and then bail. The last thing we wanted to ever do was be another one of those bands that got back together.”

Lee’s first departure came in 1999, when he felt creatively stifled by the demands of the band. He described himself as being “creatively dying slowly” within the group, prompting him to shift gears and pursue Methods of Mayhem and solo work. This initial break lasted five years before he rejoined the band in 2004.

The band’s farewell tour in 2015 and 2016 marked what many believed would be their final chapter. After the farewell run concluded, the band members largely went their separate ways. Lee noted that they didn’t even formally say goodbye to one another following their final shows. Despite this distant period, the passage of time and reflection on their shared legacy eventually brought them back together.

The reunion has proven transformative for the band’s internal dynamics. Lee recently revealed that the band members are now closer than they’ve ever been. This renewed closeness has set the stage for their current “The Return of Carnival of Sins” tour, which began in July 2026. The tour celebrates both the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking 2005-2006 Carnival of Sins tour and the band’s 45th anniversary. The 33-city tour is produced by Live Nation and features support from Extreme and Tesla, representing a triumphant return for the legendary metal band.
