Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi has opened up about his highly anticipated solo album “From The Dark,” explaining the creative decisions behind the project and addressing why his longtime bandmate Geezer Butler didn’t participate. In a recent interview, Iommi discussed the album’s direction and the musicians who contributed to the record, shedding light on a question that has intrigued fans since the project’s announcement.

Iommi was candid when asked whether he had considered working with Geezer Butler on the album. “I wanted him to play on this album, but he couldn’t do it,” he explained. “He’s doing his own album, I think. Or at the time, something happened there, so he couldn’t come to England. I wanted to get it done and finally get it out, really.”

Instead of waiting for Butler’s availability, Iommi moved forward with bassist Becky Baldwin. She shares Geezer’s stylistic approach to the instrument. “Because Becky’s, as I say, a fan of Geezer, and she plays in that style, I thought let’s give it a try. And she was good,” Iommi noted. Baldwin’s contributions helped shape the album’s sonic landscape alongside vocalist Jørn Lande, drummer Karl Brazil, and guest appearances from notable musicians.

“From The Dark” marks Iommi’s first solo full-length album in over two decades. The album arrives on October 23 through BMG. The project represents a significant milestone for the guitarist, coming in the wake of Black Sabbath’s farewell concert last summer and the subsequent passing of Ozzy Osbourne. The album was co-produced with longtime collaborator Mike Exeter and features Jørn Lande as the primary vocalist. Lande shares writing credits on all tracks.

The album’s lead single, “World Alone,” premiered at a special event in Iommi’s hometown of Birmingham. The track showcases the heavy yet upbeat direction of the record. Among the standout tracks is “Death Wake,” which features a particularly distinctive riff. When discussing the song’s opening, Iommi described the composition as deliberately unconventional. “Yes, it’s a weird riff. I like that track as well. I like anything doom,” he said, revealing his continued affinity for the darker, heavier end of the musical spectrum.

“Death Wake” is particularly noteworthy for the presence of Queen guitarist Brian May, who contributes a guest solo to the track. This collaboration represents an unexpected meeting of two legendary figures from different eras of rock music. May’s distinctive playing style adds another layer to Iommi’s doom-influenced composition. The inclusion of such high-profile guest appearances underscores the caliber of musicians Iommi assembled for this project.

The complete tracklist for “From The Dark” includes “Over The Violent Sun,” “Black Times,” “World Alone,” “Beyond The Dead,” “Stormwatcher,” “Death Wake,” “Return Of The Arbalist,” and “Legacy.” Bonus tracks “Scent Of Dark” and “Deified” are also included. The album’s diverse range of compositions demonstrates Iommi’s continued creative vitality. His ability to craft compelling material honors his legacy while pushing forward into new territory. With the October 23 release date approaching, anticipation continues to build among Black Sabbath devotees and rock fans worldwide.
