Why Guns N’ Roses Ditched Axl Rose’s Original Idea For ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine,’ Director Nigel Dick Explains

Nigel Dick says the first plan for the “Sweet Child O’ Mine” video was far darker than the clip fans know. The director explained that the concept came together over a single social meeting with Axl Rose and Alan over lunch, and that it was “very dark.”

It involved Rose being in a mental institution, looking through a window and seeing his girlfriend on the other side of the glass. In the end, the idea was dropped. According to Dick, somebody decided it was too dark, too expensive, or simply needed to be done in one day.

“Eventually somebody says, ‘You know what? This is too dark’ or ‘This is too expensive’ or ‘This just needs to be done in one day,’” Dick said on the Appetite for Distortion podcast. “Whatever the conversation is, often the first idea is not the best.”

That decision sent the project in a completely different direction. Instead of a narrative treatment built around a mental institution, the band ended up with something much simpler, and the result became one of the defining rock videos of the 1980s.

The version viewers saw was filmed in 1987 at Mendiola’s Ballroom in Huntington Park, California. The clip showed the band rehearsing onstage with their girlfriends at the time, including Erin Everly, and it was deliberately kept low-key and home-video-like rather than cinematic.

The scrapped concept would have placed Rose in a mental institution, looking through a window at his girlfriend on the other side of the glass. The same report says the idea was abandoned because it was considered too dark and too expensive for a one-day shoot.

The gamble paid off commercially. “Sweet Child O’ Mine” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its 1988 single release, at a time when heavy MTV rotation could push a rock song into the mainstream. It remains Guns N’ Roses’ first and only U.S. No. 1 single.

The video’s reach has only grown since. The black-and-white performance clip became the first music video from the 1980s to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube, a milestone it hit in October 2019. Nearly four decades later, the stripped-down shoot Dick settled on is the one history kept, while Rose’s original vision stayed on the page.
