Fans are still reacting strongly to Sammy Hagar’s decision to replace Jason Bonham with drummer Kenny Aronoff in the band’s lineup. While Hagar and Aronoff have shared videos praising their decision to shake up the setlist, some fans can’t seem to accept the change.
Under Hagar and Aronoff’s Instagram video, the backlash was clear. Fans lamented the loss of Jason Bonham, with one commenting, “What happened to Jason, he’s so good.”
Others reacted in a similar manner. “Bring back Jason!!!” and “Uggghh..get another drummer. Kenny is not the right guy for the job…yikes.”
Hagar Thinks Aronoff Is Better

Hagar briefly addressed the replacement of Jason Bonham, explaining that the decision was based on two main factors. He praised Kenny Aronoff as ‘one of the greatest drummers on the planet’ and emphasized his experience on numerous million-selling records. “There’s two reasons. Number one, he’s one of the greatest drummers on the planet. I think he’s been on more million-selling records than any musician in the world. And he did so well on this tour, and he plays with Joe on a full-time basis.”
Hagar also mentioned that Aronoff’s schedule made him a better fit for the band’s needs. “Keeping this ‘Best of All Worlds’ band together is difficult when you got Jason doing his thing, you got Joe doing his thing, you got Mike and I. We need our beach time and our taco nights, Taco Tuesdays and stuff. Trying to get it together, it really helps by having Kenny’s schedule be with Joe. If Joe’s available, Kenny’s available, and it’s not trying to put pieces together.”
Bonham had to leave due to a family emergency, and admitted being ‘a little shocked‘ upon hearing about the permanent change. Aronoff, after stepping in temporarily, made his debut at a Cincinnati show and was later confirmed as the band’s full-time drummer.
Even after the controversy, Hagar stands by the decision, hoping the fans will eventually accept the new lineup.
